Buy Wine from Costers del Segre
The Costers del Segre appellation of origin was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1983 thanks to the participation of Jaume Siurana (former president of INCAVI) and Manuel Raventós (general manager of Codorniu and Raimat) after observing the excellent quality of the wines produced in the region.
The Costers del Segre DO is made up of the following 6 production sub-zones in the province of Lleida: Raimat, Artesa, Vall de Riu Corb, Les Garrigues, Segrià and Pallars Jussà. Artesa and Pallars Jussà are the northernmost subzones and where the vineyards are located at the highest altitude under the extreme influence of the Pyrenees. In Les Garrigues and Vall de Riu Corb the sun-drenched lands are arid and dry. The climate in Raimat is continental and mild. Despite the differences presented in each subzone, it is generally observed that the climate is extreme continental with cold winters (temperatures below 0ºC) and hot summers (often exceeding 35ºC). Rainfall is scarce, but humidity is persistent with the presence of morning fog.
The vines grow on calcareous or granitic soils covered with sand and poor in organic matter. The authorized white varieties are Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada, Garnacha Blanca, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Moscatel de Alejandría, Malvasía, Gewürztraminer, Albariño and Moscatel de Grano Pequeño. For the production of red wines, the use of the reds Garnacha, Ull de Llebre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Trepat, Samsó, Syrah and Pinot Noir is permitted.
