Buy Wine from Mataburro
The Mataburro winery is located in the Catalan region of Roussillon in France, an area bathed by the Mediterranean and within sight of the Pyrenees that separate Spain from France. This small winery was established in Roussillon by Laurent Roger and Melissa Ingrand, who are considered rising stars in the world of wine. Laurent, before embarking on this project, worked for several years at the venerable wine bar Le Verre Volé in Paris, and then returned to Roussillon to work directly with Alain Castex of Le Casot des Mailloles.
Vineyards
The Mataburro vineyards are located on predominantly clay and limestone soils, and are planted next to the Mataburro railway tracks that connect Perpignan with the small villages of Roussillon. The plot includes Grenache planted in the 1970s by his grandfather and Merlot planted in the 1990s by his father. In addition, Laurent has access to some Muscat from a neighbour. The climate of the region is typically Mediterranean, characterised by hot, dry summers, which significantly influences the character of the wines.
Philosophy
The winemaking philosophy at Mataburro focuses on soil health and the use of biodynamic techniques. In the winery, Laurent works with short carbonic macerations, seeking freshness and drinkability in his wines without losing the complexity of the fruit and a strong sense of place. Vinification at Mataburro generally consists of short macerations of whole bunches without trampling to limit extraction, believing that trampling produces less delicate wines. All macerations are carried out in fibreglass, and most wines are aged in stainless steel. The wines are not filtered and have no added sulphites.
Mataburro wines, such as Otium, Idoine, Mura Mura, Quartet and Totem, reflect this philosophy. Each of them is unique in its style, showing the diversity and quality that Laurent and Melissa have managed to infuse into their wines.
