Adega Algueira, located in the green mountains of the Ribeira Sacra in Galicia, Spain, is a family winery founded in 1980 by Fernando and his wife Ana. They started with a few vineyards and a small winery, and in 1998, the Algueira brand was officially created, marking the beginning of a new era with the construction of a modern winery. Over the years, Algueira has grown to become an award-winning winery, recognised for its contribution to the wine industry and wine tourism in Ribera Sacra.
Vineyards
Adega Algueira's vineyards are located in the mountains of the Ribera Sacra, with some situated on spectacular slopes of up to 85 degrees along the Sil River. The winery focuses on native varieties and quality over quantity, seeking to express the unique identity of the region in every bottle. The climate is diverse and capricious, with rich microclimates due to the varied orientation of the hillsides. Soils vary according to location: in Amandi, slate and schist predominate, while in Cortezada, quartz and gneiss soils offer freshness and lightness to the white varieties.
Philosophy
Adega Algueira 's philosophy focuses on making wines that reflect the terroir and tradition of Ribera Sacra. Since its first crianza wine in 2000, Algueira has experimented with varieties and techniques to create unique wines. The winery has made a strong commitment to white wines, using varieties such as Godello, Treixadura and Albariño, and has innovated with less conventional red wines, such as Merenzao and Brancellao. Each Algueira wine is a tribute to the land, tradition and innovation.
Adega Algueira produces a wide range of wines, from the lightest and simplest to the most solid and complex. Their white wines include Brandan, made from Godello grapes, and Cortezada, a blend of Godello, Albariño and Treixadura. As for the reds, they offer the Mencia Joven, 100% Mencia, and others such as Carravel, Pizarra, Fincas, Amaral, Serradelo and Risco. These wines reflect the diversity of varieties and terroirs of the Ribera Sacra, and are made with a focus on the expression of the terroir and the use of varied winemaking methods.
