Gramona is born from the merging of two family sagas: the Batlles and the Gramonas. Since its beginnings, both families have been devoted to grape growing, wine producing, mainly sparkling and its distribution.
Its history goes back to 1850 when Josep Batlle was the owner of La Plana plot, growing Xarel.lo and Macabeo. An estate that after some years would pass to Gramona's possession. In 1881 his son, Pau Batlle, builts a winery behind his house in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia that will be known as “Celler Batlle” and where the first winemaking will take place… This is the starting point of Gramona's cava. In 1913 Pilar Batlle, Pau's daugther, marries Bartolomeu Gramona and they will both manage together the family business as well as Gramona's cava distribution. This humble couple will have five children; two of them will follow in the winery, Bartomeu and Josep Lluís, during the 40's. It is thanks to their efforts that Gramona's cava will get to be known both in Spain and internationally, they strengthen their position in the market along with other cava producers such as Juvé i Camps, Codorniu and Freixenet. In those years there were few wineries committed to cava production following the méthode Champenoise or traditional method. At the same time, Bartomeu and Josep Lluís were the brains behind today's celebrated cuvées Gramona Imperial, III Lustros and Celler Batlle… long ageing cavas with self-identity!
Today, 130 years later, Xavier and Jaume Gramona, sons of Bartomeu and Josep Lluís, are the fifth generation in the company. Jaume, with oenology degree by the University of Dijon and Xavier, with a Bachelor Degree in Business by ESADE, have raised the reputation and status of Gramona to the highest point. Located at the hub of Penedés wine making activity and with a total 150 hectares of vineyard, they produce cava sparkling wines following the méthode Champenoise but with a very distinct style: long ageing cavas with prevailing wine, well integrated magical bubbles and autolysis flavour. They also produce still wines (mainly white) and Eiswein sweet wines following the artificial method of freezing Riesling and Gewüztraminer grapes, under the designation of origin Penedés.
Which are the most outstanding Gramona wines? Gramona Imperial is definitely one of the best cavas produced in Spain as far as quality is concerned and at an unbeatable price. It is a Grand Reserve cava, with 3 to 4 years ageing on bottle racks and produced with Macabeo, Xarel.lo and Chardonnay; Gramona III Lustros produced with a high percentage of Xarel.lo and Macabeo, and a minimum ageing of 5 years. With the Xarel.lo variety a good ageing potential is achieved and so autolysis flavours are developed: coffee, milk, butter, pastry and marron glacé. Gramona Celler Batlle is the ultimate expression of cava worldwide, because there is no better cava than this one. It has a minimum ageing of 8 years and it flavours of custard, toffee, dried fruits, hazelnuts and quinces on a mineral base. We are in front of a high class cava that in a blind taste we would mistake it for an exquisite Salon champagne; Gramona Argent pursues decidedly the classical champagne Blanc de Blancs productions. A cava with a considerable degree of freshness and prevailing notes of citric, white flowers and granny smith green apple. A refreshing versión indeed! Gramona Mas Escorpí has its origin at “Mas Escorpí” and “El Serralet” estates, where Chardonnay ripens quickly. It is an unctuous and tropical wine ideal to match with fish rice and sushi. Gramona Sauvignon Blanc is produced with grapes grown at “Can Aguilera” estate, located 500 metres above sea level, with licorella (slate) soils and continental climate. It is only a 5 hectares vineyard plot with severe temperature changes between days and night, so the optimal maturity is only achieved in good years. This wine recalls Loire's Sauvignon Blanc, where the main notes are grapefruit, peach and wet stone. Gramona Vi de Glass Riesling is created with the idea of an Eiswein (sweet dessert German) by partially freezing late harvested grapes and slow fermentation. What we get here is a cast of roses, orange blossom and exotic fruits with pleasant acidity.
