Dominio de Atauta is located in the remote and majestic Atauta Valley, in the region of Soria, part of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin.
This winery was founded in 2000 by Miguel Sánchez, a wine distributor whose vision was to enhance the historical and viticultural heritage of the region, known for its centuries-old, pre-phylloxera vineyards. The founding of the winery was undertaken with the aim of rescuing and giving new life to these vineyards, taking advantage of the diversity and unique potential of the terroir. In the latter part of the 2000s, Dominio de Atauta was acquired by the Avante Selecta group, which later adopted the name Terra Selecta. This business group, part of the Jové family's Inveravante corporation, manages a number of wineries in different appellations in Spain. Terra Selecta's approach has allowed Dominio de Atauta to combine its rich history and traditional methods with modern winemaking and marketing techniques, ensuring that the wines continue to reflect the identity of the valley.
Vineyards
The Dominio de Atauta vineyard is a living treasure of viticulture, with plants that have withstood the passage of time and climatic adversities for more than a century. This pre-phylloxera vineyard, between 120 and 180 years old, is one of the oldest in Poundpe, a silent testimony to a tradition that has endured and flourished in a challenging environment. The vines grow in soils characteristically poor and shallow, limiting production to small quantities; each vine produces enough grapes for less than a 0.75-litre bottle. This guarantees a unique concentration of fruit, which is reflected in the intensity of the wines.
The Atauta Valley has a diverse topography: a landscape only 4 km long and 1 km wide with remarkable variations in soil composition and depth. This geological microcosm ranges from steep slopes to moorland and valley areas, which contributes to the diversity in the character of the grapes grown. The calcareous rock in the subsoil brings a marked minerality to the wines, a characteristic that reinforces the authenticity of each vintage.
The climate is another key element in the vineyard's profile. Low average temperatures, low rainfall and extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night during the ripening period allow for a balanced accumulation of sugars and aromatic compounds. In addition, the constant wind blowing from west to east helps to reduce humidity, minimising the risk of disease and promoting a more sustainable crop.
Philosophy
Dominio de Atauta 's philosophy is based on the premise thatgreat wines are born in the vineyard. That is why the team devotes meticulous and almost reverential attention to the cultivation of the grapes. Sustainable viticulture methods and traditional practices are employed that respect the natural balance of the ecosystem, without resorting to aggressive chemicals. The winery's conviction is that only by taking care at every stage of the growing process can grapes of exceptional quality be obtained.
In winemaking, the winery follows a minimal intervention approach. This means that the grapes, once harvested by hand, are gently processed to avoid altering their purity. The use of indigenous yeasts is an essential part of the winemaking process, allowing the wines to ferment naturally and retain the unique character of their origin. Fermentations are carried out in small vats, which facilitates precise control of the process and allows each plot to express its own identity.
The ageing of the wines takes place in carefully selected oak barrels, seeking a balance between the influence of the wood and the expression of the fruit. The result is wines that encapsulate the essence of the Atauta Valley, where elegance, structure and minerality combine to offer a unique sensory experience.
More than simply making wine, the winery seeks to tell a story in each bottle: the story of dedicated work, of an environment that challenges and rewards, and of tradition that has stood the test of time. This project is, above all, a tribute to the land and to the generations that have farmed on it.
