Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
I also tasted an unbottled sample of the 2017 Aloers when I met with winemaker Ton Mata, as the wine was to be bottled in one month. 2017 was an extremely dry year that followed two very dry years, which resulted in tiny yields of 26.5 hectoliters per hectare. It's lower in alcohol than the 2016. It's still very young and a little closed, but it's the palate where it shows what the future will bring. It has the combination of the leesy character with the fine tannins from the skin maceration, with a marked bitterness in the finish—a nice way of showing the Mediterranean character of the wines without the need of using barrels, just with skins, stems and lees. Tasting so many interpretations of Xarello is fascinating. Only 1,666 bottles produced.
