Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The growing season that bore the 2003 Tokaji Aszu 6-Puttonyos was apparently similar to the 2000. It delivers 228 grams per liter residual sugar with 9.4 grams per liter acidity. Lucid amber in color, it boasts an exotic, decadent bouquet of mango, molasses, Chinese 5-spice and dried quince that does not quite deliver the delineation of the best 5-Puttonyos from Oremus. The palate, however, does deliver. It has superior focus and delineation than augured by the aromatics, with vibrant marmalade and quince notes. The acidity is extremely well-judged and lends the finish the weightless intensity that makes a great aszu wine. It is just the aromatics that let the side down. Drink now-2030.

Features

Description

Oremus Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos is a living testimony to the rich history and winemaking tradition of the Tokaj region, located in the north-eastern part of Hungary. This region, which lies in a mountain range, is the geographical centre of the Oremus Winery, whose vineyard has been universally recognised since 1630.
The vineyard, with an average age of 19 years, covers an area of 98 hectares, with a planting area of 5,660 plants per hectare. Located at an altitude of 200 metres, it offers a yield of 200-500 kg/ha (3,000-5,000 litres per hectare). Harvesting is 100% manual, carried out in two or three shifts from the end of September to the beginning of November. The grape varieties used are Furmint, Hárslevelü, Zéta and Sárgauskotály.

Winemaking

The production of Aszú wine, also known as tear wine, is a meticulous process that is only carried out in exceptional vintages and under specific conditions that favour the development of 'Botrytis cinerea' or noble rot. The tradition is kept alive by adding to the base must 6 baskets (puttonyos) containing 25 kg of Aszú noble berries, individually harvested and covered with Botrytis. These grapes are macerated for 12 to 24 hours, allowing them to grow in size, and then gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in new Hungarian oak barrels for approximately one month. The wine is then aged for 2 to 3 years in 136 and 220 litre barrels, culminating in an additional 4 to 5 years of bottle ageing.

Taste

Oremus Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos with an alcohol content of 11% and a sugar content of 171 g/l, is a wine that exudes luxury in every drop. It is characterised by its fine acidity of 8.8 g/l, which perfectly complements its extraordinary sweetness. On the nose it is a complex wine, with notes of honey and fruits of the forest. On the palate, its sharp acidity perfectly balances the luxurious sweetness that characterises it.
