Buy Wine with Verdejo
Verdejo variety gets its name from the green colour of its grapes. It comes from the winery region of Rueda, where it is thought to have been introduced by the mozarabs. It has packed mid-small clusters with thick skinned berries and a distinctive flowering in greenish-blue colours. Verdejo has an early-mid budding and ripening, not very vigorous nor fruitful, so long pruning is recommended. It is a variety with good endurance to drought and well acclimated to limestone soils poor in organic material. It is pretty sensitive to powdery mildew.
Verdejo is the queen variety in the Rueda designation of origin, in Castilla y León, but it is also very popular in Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura. Verdejo wines are really aromatic (with notes of bay leaf, hay, freshly mown lawn and bitter almonds), full-bodied and moderately acid. Normally it is used for young white wines but there are also good barrel aged white wines. In Rueda, the Verdejo variety is blended with Sauvignon Blanc.
The best Verdejo producers are: Belondrade y Lurtón, José Pariente, Lorenzo Cachazo, Marqués de Riscal, Naia, Ossian and Javier Sanz.
