Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
There are a couple of new reds in 2022, including a rare varietal Baboso Negro. The 2022 John Stone Tinto comes from the same vineyard that produces the white of the same name but from a row of the variety that was never able to produce a wine before. This is still super reductive, with flinty notes, a hint of struck match, toasted seeds, herbs and wild berries, and the palate has acid berries and a sharp and austere finish. I guess this will take time to polish its edges in bottle...

Description
Bimbache John Stone Tinto is the result of an almost earthy intuition. Rayco Fernández, the mastermind behind Bimbache, took a gamble on a forgotten row of vines in the legendary "Piedra Juan" vineyard in El Hierro, which had never produced a full wine. In 2022, for the first time, that row - composed of Baboso Negro, Listán Negro and Vijariego Negro -found expression. Planted more than 60 years ago on sandy soils of volcanic origin, these vines resist the constant trade winds on the heights of "El Monte", not far from La Frontera. This wine is a manifesto of origin: wild, sincere, deeply islander.
Winemaking
The vinification of Bimbache John Stone Tinto follows the philosophy of minimum intervention: 40% whole cluster, spontaneous fermentation in open vats and an initial touch of sulphur. Pumping over is carried out by daily punching down, ensuring gentle extraction and stable temperature. After fermentation, the wine is lightly pressed and rests for nine months on its fine lees in stainless steel tanks. There is no oak ageing. The final blend before bottling includes a minimal SO₂ correction. Everything about it respects the energy and tension of its volcanic origin.
Taste
Extremely reductive in its early stages, Bimbache John Stone Tinto unfolds with notes of gunpowder, flint and extinguished match. After long hours in the decanter, the wine reveals a complex nose: forest fruits, balsamic herbs, toasted seeds and a subtle salinity that evokes sea mist. The palate is vertical, with a firm, sharp acidity, marked by blackcurrants, a faint trace of acid strawberry and a stony, almost saline texture. The finish is severe, dry, precise, with a volcanic minerality reminiscent of the volcanic black that gave birth to these grapes. It is not an indulgent wine: it is for those who seek the untamed, the genuine. Bimbache John Stone Tinto is a red wine that opens its way with character and rewards the wait.
