Description
For more than three centuries, the Trimbach family has been growing Riesling in Alsace with a clear philosophy: to respect the purest expression of the terroir. Trimbach Alsace Riesling Vendanges Tardives was born of a bold decision - to wait. To let the grapes remain on the vine beyond the conventional, risking climate and losses, in the hope of capturing a perfect balance between sugar, acidity and aromatic expression. Only in exceptional years is this cuvée bottled, made from 100% Riesling from selected vineyards, where the combination of chalky soils, cool climate and cool nights allows for slow over-ripening, preserving freshness without sacrificing richness.
Winemaking
Harvesting is manual and late, with a rigorous selection of overripe bunches. The grapes enter the winery intact, where they are gently pressed and slowly fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures to preserve the varietal typicity. Trimbach Alsace Riesling Vendanges Tardives retains some natural residual sugar - full fermentation is not forced, but leaving a degree of natural residual sugar - which, combined with firm acidity and a mineral structure, results in a sweet but elegant wine. No oak is used, which allows for a clean, crystalline expression, without make-up.
Taste
On the nose, Trimbach Alsace Riesling Vendanges Tardives displays aromas of light honey, ripe apricot, quince and candied citrus. There are also notes of white flowers, beeswax and a mineral background reminiscent of wet flint. The palate is full and unctuous, with an almost glyceric texture, but supported by a precise acidity that keeps it vibrant. The sweetness is perfectly balanced: never cloying. There are layers ofripe yellow fruit, orange zest, pear compote and a subtle hint of fresh spice. The finish is long, with an elegant salinity and an echo of candied fruit and wilted flowers. It is a wine that speaks in complex whispers, perfect for those who appreciate the contrast between sweetness, freshness and minerality.
