Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
From granite de Tannenkirch soils, the 2021 Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg is from a 1.6-hectare plot on horizontal terraces in the highest altitude of the Schlossberg. The 2021 opens with a clear and quite intense, warm and concentrated nose of fully ripe and fleshy yet less juicy fruits whose flavors intermingle with herbal and rocky notes. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a refined and persistently saline, very long yet certainly not powerful and possibly also less complex and textural Riesling compared to the other Trimbach grands crus. The finish is a bit austere at this stage. In 2021, the vineyard had been cultivated for 10 years by Trimbach, and it might be the terroir, but this is the leanest and most austere of the family's Rieslings, at least at this early stage. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.

Description
Trimbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling was born from a strategic and deeply thought-out decision by the Trimbach family: in 2012, they acquired almost two hectares of the legendary Grand Cru Schlossberg, one of Alsace's most emblematic vineyards. Located on granite slopes between Ribeauvillé and Kaysersberg, this terroir combines pure granite and migmatite soils, south-facing horizontal terraces and a cool microclimate next to the forest, allowing for slow and complex ripening. The vines, between 35 and 40 years old, offer low yields (35 hl/ha), but uncompromising mineral intensity.
The Trimbach family, with more than thirteen generations dedicated to wine, waited for the right vineyard to give shape to their vision of a Grand Cru in their own way: sober, structured, without ornamentation. The first wine from this plot saw the light of day in 2014, and since then, the Trimbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling has established itself as a Riesling of precision, restrained energy and granitic character.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand as late as possible, always aiming for perfect ripeness. In the case of Trimbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling, after a very gentle pneumatic pressing, the must ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for three to four weeks. No oak ageing or bâtonnage: priority is given to the pure expression of the terroir and the verticality of the wine.
Taste
On the nose Trimbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling is subtle and clean, with notes of lemon, white peach and a delicate mineral background. As it opens up, nuances of grapefruit, lime blossom and a barely hinted salinity emerge. On the palate, it is taut, sharp, precise, with a vibrant acidity that is the backbone of the wine. The centre of the palate reveals ripe, juicy fruit, but always restrained, without exuberance. The finish is long, citrusy, slightly spicy, with an almost stony texture and a sense of crystalline purity that invites another sip. A Riesling for cellaring, designed for purists, where the granite speaks softly but firmly.
