Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Quinta Do Noval Nacional 1997 has a fragrant bouquet that boasts more delineation than the Vintage Noval, although it demonstrates approximately the same degree of vigour. There is a fine mineral component on the nose with macerated dark cherries, hoisin, cigar box and dried fig that seem to multiply exponentially with vigor. The palate is elegant on the entry with supple rounded tannins, well-judged acidity and purity, building gently in the mouth from its understated entry towards its peacock tail of mulberry, clove and raisin towards the finish. This is a step up from the 1994 Nacional, though if you want to split hairs, it does not possess the mind-boggling complexity of later vintages. However, it does purr with class. Drink now-2045.

Features

Description

Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional is an exceptional wine that comes from a small plot in the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard, planted with ungrafted vines unaffected by phylloxera. The term "National" refers to the fact that the vines are indigenous Portuguese, growing in Portuguese soil without any foreign rootstock, thus being "united to the soil of the Nation". This great wine is a source of pride for the Portuguese people and, at its best, is the ultimate representation of Quinta do Noval's extraordinary terroir.
Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional is a unique and extraordinary phenomenon. It does not always follow the same rhythm as the rest of Quinta do Noval. In some years, a Nacional is produced even when Noval does not declare Quinta do Noval Vintage. However, when this happens, the wines are always profoundly different.

Winemaking

The wine is made using several grape varieties, not just Touriga Nacional, as the name might suggest. These varieties are some of the noblest found in the Douro Valley: Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Touriga Nacional, Souson and Tinta Roriz. Vinification is carried out in the same way as with all the other grapes from the Quinta do Noval vineyard. The grapes are trodden by foot to obtain the must as well as during fermentation, to achieve the best possible extraction in the lagares, the Quinta's traditional stone vats. Subsequently, Quinta do Noval Nacional matures for 18 months in oak and chestnut barrels, with a capacity of 2,500 litres.

Taste

Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional shows a deep and vibrant ruby colour. Initially rich and unrestricted on the nose, it reveals a lovely perfume with floral fruity aromas, a rare expression for this wine at this stage, as it opens up in the glass. Very dense on the palate, it shows delicious plum and berry flavours, backed by layers of silky tannins and a touch of liquorice. It leads to a smooth, long and delicately spiced floral finish. This wine exhibits remarkable elegance and purity.
