Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
There is one more red from the Ribeira Sacra zone in the banks of the Miño, a bottling called 2015 Penapedre, which is a blend of 60% Mencía, 30% Garnacha Tintorera and 10% white grapes (Palomino and Godello) from ancient (believed to be centenary) vines. The wine is fermented with full clusters and foot treading in a new 4,000-liter chestnut vat and matured in a 500-liter oak barrel with lees for 12 months. It has a similar character to the Miñato da Raña; perhaps I found a little more finesse here, maybe because it was polished by a slightly longer élevage. There is lovely rusticity in both, which gives it character. It would be superb if it was a little livelier. There is some lactic/creamy notes, which could be from the chestnut vat or because one of the barrels provided that note that grew in the glass. 2,255 bottles were filled in January 2017. This is a joint venture with some friends. Part of it is bottled by Eulogio Pomares and the rest is here; the wines are the same, only the élevage is different.

Winemaking
Fermented with indigenous yeasts and malolactic fermentation with stems in new, open chestnut foudres of 4,000 litres. Aged for 12 months in 400 and 500 litre French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Description
From the beginning, Nanclares and Prieto have been advocates of honest, unadorned viticulture, guided by the land and not by the market. The story of Penapedre began when Alberto Nanclares came across a hundred-year-old vineyard hanging over the Sil, in Ribeira Sacra, in the area of the same name. Degraded granite soils, steep slopes, access on foot: what many would avoid, he embraced: "Nothing can be made up here", he would later say. This small estate is worked manually, without herbicides or synthetic fertilisers. The dominant variety is Mencía, accompanied by Garnacha tintorera ( around 30%) and a small portion of Palomino fino and Godello which adds tension and perfume. An ancestral blend that respects the vineyard as it is.
Winemaking
Harvesting of Nanclares and Prieto Penapedre is manual, bunch by bunch, and fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in an old chestnut vat of 4,000 litres, with the stems included, as in the old days. The maceration is delicate, more by infusion than by extraction. There are no corrections or strict temperature control. After malolactic fermentation, Nanclares Prieto Penapedre is transferred to 400 and 500-litre used French oak barrels, where it rests for 12 months on its fine lees. The whole process seeks to preserve the character of the vineyard without adding artifice. It is bottled without fining or filtering.
Taste
Nanclares Prieto Penapedre is an Atlantic red wine of restrained tension. The nose shows an elegant palette: sour cherry, blackcurrant, black plum and a hint of violet mingle with notes of graphite, damp earth and a hint of liquorice. In the background, subtle smoky and balsamic nuances emerge. The palate is vibrant, fluid but with nerve. Atlantic acidity sets the pace, while fine tannins add structure without harshness. It is not an opulent wine, but precise, mineral, deeply linked to the soil from which it is born. The finish is long, fresh, with a saline and spicy echo. Nanclares Prieto Penapedre does not seek to seduce immediately, but to remain in the memory. It is a wine that speaks softly, but with an intensity that will not be forgotten.
