Buy Wine from Jorge Ordóñez CO
Jorge Ordóñez & Co was born in 2004 from the hand of the Malaga family of the Ordóñez and the Austrian winemaker Alois Kracher; captained by Jorge Ordóñez, reputed importer for the U.S. and his sister, Victoria Ordóñez.A and his sister, Victoria Ordóñez put their trust in the elaboration of the wines, initially to Alois Kracher (specialized in the elaboration of sweet wines) and after his death to his son Gerhard Kracher; later, in 2010, Alistair Gardner joined as assistant of technical direction in order to contribute with his experience in the elaboration of dry wines.
Jorge Ordóñez & Co is part of the winery conglomerate Grupo Jorge Ordóñez, which produces TOP wines in twelve Spanish appellations.
Initially the winery was installed in Almachar (Axarquia region) motivated by the tradition in the production of raisins but now the winery is located in Velez-Malaga since 2008. Its location is not trivial since the winery is dedicated to the production of very fine sweet wines.
The Axarquia region is the driest area of the whole Spanish territory, with slate soils and steep slopes and influenced by the neighboring Mediterranean Sea; the average temperature is 16º C but it is at night when the temperature drops the most; in terms of topography and due to the steep slopes (between 40% and 60%) mechanization is practically impossible, having to perform all the work manually.
At Jorge Ordóñez & Cothey seek the identity of the wines they make, starting from native varietals and from areas with a long winemaking vocation, but always innovating in favor of quality; proof of this is the elaboration of the wines they make.
The winery belongs to the D.O. Malaga and Sierras de Malaga and has a fleet of 50 barrels and a total annual production of 150,000 bottles, 85% for the export market and 15% for domestic consumption; its focus is on the production of naturally sweet wines with the native variety Moscatel de Alejandría and from old vines, although they also produce a Dry Moscatel that is protected under the D.O. Sierras de Malaga. It is important to note that although Jorge Ordóñez & Co has its own vineyard, it is usual to source grapes from farmers in the area.
Among its wines we highlight Botani, a dry Moscatel that shows the typical terpenic character of the grape but is perfectly balanced in the mouth due to its acidity and dryness; Esencia nº 4 is a clear example of the most raisined Moscatel that also provides an aromatic complexity wrapped by its 2 years of barrel aging.
