Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Originating in considerable acreage of Grenache Gris from an iron-rich schiste site not far from the Coume Gineste; vinified in cement and aged in demi-muid, Gaubys' 2009 Coume del Lloups displays, says Lionel Gauby, 'the true color of Grenache Gris,' namely a pale partridge eye, enhanced by both maceration on the skins and paucity of sulfur, for something that it's now fashionable to refer to as an 'orange wine.' The best north-facing parcels of this site informed the present bottling, while the rest went into this vintage's Vieilles Vignes. Musky floral perfume, citrus oils, and Ceylon tea in the nose anticipate the nuanced complexity of a firm, bright, polished, palpably extract-rich palate, yet one imbued with a remarkable sense of lift and delicacy. (In fact, this harbors a mere 12.7% alcohol - in vintage 2009!) The sense of mineral and classic Grenache Gris impingement is subtle but persistent and invigoratingly vibratory. This will be fascinating to follow, but I won't predict for how long. There is a larger volume of extremely promising 2010.
