Buy Wine from Burja Estate
The Burja Estate Winery is located in the traditional wine-growing environment of Vipava, Slovenia, in the village of Podnanos. This winery combines traditional Vipava viticulture with a modern understanding of wine. The history of viticulture in the region of modern Slovenia dates back to ancient Noricum, the forerunner of Carinthia. The roots of viticulture in this territory are deep, with evidence dating back to the 2nd century and mentions of Slovenian wine varieties in historical chronicles.
The Lavrenčič family settled in the Vipava Valley in 1499 and, like most of the population, engaged in agriculture and viticulture. In addition to viticulture, the Lavrenčič's maternal family was also involved in blacksmithing.Vineyards
The vineyards of Burja Estate cover several hectares, including: Ravno Brdo (Podraga) 1.7 hectares of Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch, Malvasia, Riesling, Welschriesling, Ribolla Gialla; Stranice (Podraga) 1.6 hectares of Refosco, Pokalca, Malvasia, Riesling; Zadomajc (Podraga) 0.8 hectares of Pinot Noir; Golavna (Orehovica, Pasji rep) 1.4 hectares of Zelen; and Ostri vrh (Orehovica, Pasji rep) 1.6 hectares of Ribolla Gialla, Riesling and Pinot Noir.
The soil in these vineyards has developed slowly in sedimentary marls and sandstones more than fifty million years old. These rocks, rich in calcium carbonate, were formed in the sea during the Eocene epoch. The soil is heavy and retains moisture effectively, and is composed mainly of calcite, flint and mica. These soil characteristics are essential for the delicate vines.
Philosophy
Burja Estate focuses on integrity and respect for local varieties. The winery values the diversity and richness of its vineyards and considers the microflora to be an essential part of each vineyard's identity. In the winery, they only control a few things, such as temperature and oxidation, and allow nature to do the rest. They seek to work in synergy with the vine, the wine and nature, including spontaneous fermentation, which guarantees contact between the grape skin and the must, even with white wines.
Burja Estate 's mission is to continue and further the tradition of Vipava viticulture and winemaking and, together with Vipava colleagues, to build a strong regional wine brand.
