Buy Wine from Ànima Negra
The Ànima Negra winery is located in the town of Felanitx, in the southeast of the island of Mallorca. This project was born in 1994 by Miquel Àngel Cerdà and Pere Obrador, who, together with oenologist Francesc Grimalt, promoted the renovation of Mallorcan wines.
The winery is located in the old"possessió" of Son Burguera, an agricultural estate dating back to the 13th century, which from its beginnings was already equipped with facilities for winemaking. Although in its last stage it was used as a cheese factory, the estate has been adapted and modernised to meet the quality standards of the winery.Miquel Àngel Cerdà and Pere Obrador decided to create a wine using native grapes from the island, thus making a significant difference in the market. Over time, the project was consolidated and today they are advised by Xavier Ausàs, former oenologist at Vega Sicilia. From modest beginnings to becoming a cult winery, Ànima Negra has evolved constantly, exporting 85% of its production to more than 40 countries.
Vineyards
The Ànima Negra vineyards are made up of some 150 micro-plots located within a 10 km radius of the winery in Felanitx, with some additional vineyards in the western part of Mallorca. Grape varieties include Callet, Mantonegro, Fogoneu, Premsal Blanc and Giró Ros. These vineyards, many of them old, are planted in diverse soils that coexist with fruit trees such as apricots, pears, peaches, plums and cherries, taking advantage of the exposure to the sea wind.
The soil and climate of Mallorca play a fundamental role in the quality of Ànima Negra wines. Harvesting is carried out manually and optically, using a gravity system to transport the grapes to the stainless steel and cement tanks. The most significant aspect is the use of autochthonous yeasts from Son Negre's own vineyards, developed from a genetic bank formed over the years by the winery, which allows the typicity of the island's grape varieties to be enhanced.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Ànima Negra focuses on making wines that are a sincere reflection of the Mallorcan terroir. The winery departs from current trends of impersonal winemaking, opting instead for an approach that seeks the highest quality and authenticity. This premise guides every aspect of the winemaking process, from harvest to vinification.
The winery uses winemaking techniques that honour the relationship between plant, soil and climate, ensuring that each wine is an authentic expression of its origin. At a time when technique and profitability can compromise quality, Ànima Negra maintains a radical commitment to humility before the land. Oenology is carried out in the field, and the winery acts as a temple for the preservation of authenticity.
The wines of Ànima Negra are known for their distinctive character and their ability to reflect the Mediterranean landscape. The winery produces around 250,000 bottles a year from 70 hectares of estate vineyards. Among their most outstanding wines are: Quíbia, a peculiar white made from the white variety Premsal, the rosé Giró Ros and the red Callet vinified in white, in the manner of a blanc de noirs; ÀN/2, its entry-level red, a Callet base (65%) with Mantonegro, Fogoneu and 15% Syrah, which provides an unmistakable Mediterranean character; ÀN, a single varietal Callet from old vines, elegant and expressive, from vineyards where the vines share space with fruit trees; and Son Negre, a caprice wine, a coupage of Callet, Mantonegro and Fogoneu that is only made in the best vintages, with labels designed by the famous Mallorcan artist Miquel Barceló.
The bodega has chosen not to belong to any specific denomination of origin, but to embrace the geographical indication Vinos de la Tierra de Mallorca, which allows them to develop their own identity and to search for the perfect balance in their wines. This independence also reflects their philosophy that authenticity is not only paid for with money, but with a genuine commitment to history and quality.
ÀnimaNegra has established itself as a cult winery, not only in Mallorca but also on the international wine scene. With a philosophy focused on authenticity and quality, and an unwavering commitment to indigenous varieties and Mallorcan terroir, Ànima Negra continues its legacy of producing wines that not only represent the best of Mallorcan viticulture, but also tell a unique and authentic story with every bottle.
