Trimbach Alsace Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile 2018

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Riesling Frédéric Emile opens with clear, bright, ripe and juicy yet delicate fruit intertwined with floral and herbal notes. Powerful and supple on the palate, this is a densely textured cuvée with fine acidity and refreshing mineral substance that leads to a long, intense and savory/saline finish. The wine is very compact, still very tightly structured and with still astringent tannins, and it will probably need more time than the 2019 to develop in the bottle. This has 0.7 grams per liter of residual sugar and 14% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.

Description
The Trimbach family has been making this cuvée since the 1960s as a tribute to Frédéric Émile, the winery's visionary ancestor. Sourced exclusively from a vineyard located between the Grands Crus Osterberg and Geisberg, on the slopes of Ribeauvillé, this AlsaceRiesling is born in a soil of marl, limestone and sandstone that confers an unmistakable minerality. With vines over 55 years old and a south-southeast exposure, the vineyard enjoys a privileged microclimate: the Vosges protect it from the rain and allow for slow, concentrated ripening. Trimbach, faithful to its dry, precise style, has maintained a minimalist philosophy for decades, letting the grapes and the terroir speak for themselves. A difficult vintage did not prevent them from following this line: they preferred to lose part of the harvest rather than compromise the purity of the wine.
Winemaking
The grapes for Trimbach Alsace Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile are harvested by hand and gently pressed in a pneumatic press. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and old foudres, always without malolactic fermentation, to preserve freshness and acidity. There is no prolonged ageing on the lees: the aim is a clear, sharp, transparent expression of the Riesling. Trimbach Alsace Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is bottled in the spring and rests for seven years in the cellar before being released, thus showing its full potential. With cellaring, it can easily develop for more than 20 years.
Taste
On the nose, Trimbach Alsace Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile reveals itself to be complex: tight citrus (lime, lemon), white flowers, apricot, wild peach and an echo of chalk and wet stone. It is not exuberant, but elegant and restrained. The palate is dry, precise, with a vibrant acidity that structures the whole. The mid-palate is ample, with a fat, enveloping texture, but without sweetness. There is a firm, saline minerality, with notes of ripe white fruits, citrus zest and an almost saline touch on the finish. Persistent, aristocratic, a wine of contemplation and gastronomy, demanding attention and offering reward.
