Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Village delivers aromas of raspberries, cherries and incense, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy and lively palate, concluding with a saline finish.

Description

At Domaine Trapet, wine is not simply a product, but rather the extension of an intimate relationship between family, vineyard and landscape. This historic estate in Gevrey Chambertin found its modern voice when Jean-Louis Trapet took a bold decision: to abandon conventional viticulture, eliminate herbicides and transition the vineyard to biodynamic farming. This was no mere posturing, but a way of restoring life to the soil and authenticity to the wine. Trapet Gevrey Chambertin, made from Pinot Noir, emerges from a mosaic of 10 plots spanning 4.5 hectares, offering a choral interpretation of the village. Here, Lias marl, gravel and old vines—including a plot planted in 1913—come together within an appellation where Trapet strives to ensure that depth does not overwhelm finesse.

Winemaking

It all begins in the vineyard, where biodynamic practices aim to produce healthier, riper and more vibrant fruit. The harvest is carried out by hand and the selection is rigorous, always with the intention of preserving the identity of each plot. The estate has been working with whole bunches for many years, adhering to a philosophy of minimal intervention to ensure that technique does not overpower the terroir. In Trapet Gevrey Chambertin, this cuvée prioritises fidelity to the character of Gevrey Chambertin over the display of ageing: some plots contribute structure, others density, and others that mineral edge so characteristic of the village. The ageing process aims to refine the texture and add depth without masking the wine, so that it reaches bottling with purity, tension and balance.

Flavour

In the glass, Trapet Gevrey Chambertin does not seek immediate impact, but rather a more subtle and noble allure. Hints of red cherry, raspberry, delicate blackberry, spices, delicate flowers and an earthy, stony undertone emerge, ensuring it always retains a sense of gravitas. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with precise freshness and firm yet velvety tannins. It is neither a heavy nor a severe Burgundy red; it has substance, but also a fine, fresh and elegant line that gives it length. The finish offers black berries, subtle spice, fresh earth and a restrained minerality, with that highly appealing combination of vigour, composure and refinement.
