Description
Pierre Morey, a discreet but essential figure in Burgundy, has devoted his life to biodynamic viticulture with conviction. A pioneer of these practices in Côte de Beaune, he started working in this way when he was still seen as an eccentric. In Monthélie, he makes this Pinot Noir from six small plots - La Goulotte, Les Clous, Les Longères, Les Gamets, Les Sous Courts and Les Crays - totalling just 1.32 hectares. Planted in 1965, the vines are nourished by varied soils: red clays, broken limestone, chalk outcrops. This diversity is blended into a wine that does not seek to impress, but to excite with authenticity.
Winemaking
The production of Pierre Morey Monthélie begins with the complete destemming of the grapes, which ferment with indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats, allowing a precise expression of the terroir. During maceration, gentle pumping over and punching down are applied, seeking extraction without aggressiveness. The Pierre Morey Monthélie is aged for 15 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with between 30 and 70 % new wood, depending on the character of the year. No fining or filtering is carried out and the wine is bottled by gravity, preserving the integrity of the wine as much as possible.
Taste
Pierre Morey Monthélie is seductive without being overbearing. The nose opens with notes of dark plum, ripe cherry and a subtle smoky veil, followed by liquorice and a delicate mineral trace. The palate is fluid, precise, with an enveloping texture and fine tannins. The red fruit - juicy but restrained - combines with a vibrant freshness and a chalky backdrop that adds tension and length. There is clarity, elegance and a serene balance that allows it to be enjoyed young, but also augurs a harmonious evolution. It is a wine that speaks softly, but says a lot to those who know how to listen.
