Description

Morey-Blanc has its roots in a history of Burgundian resilience rather than mere commercial expansion. The Morey family has been tending vineyards in Burgundy for centuries and in Meursault since 1793; later, Pierre Morey founded his own domaine and went on to establish Maison Morey-Blanc to continue producing great appellations under a very personal vision: absolute respect for the vineyard, minimal intervention and an almost stubborn belief that the wine must speak with the voice of the terroir. TheMorey-Blanc Volnay 1er Cru Pitures, produced since 2018, is made exclusively from Pinot Noir.

Pitures is situated halfway up a hillside, near the village of Volnay and very close to Clos des Ducs. It is a site with a rather cool profile, capable of offering the ethereal elegance typical of Volnay, but also a depth and tension that are far from complacent. Here, the terroir imparts a floral and refined character, though underpinned by a more serious, cooler and more mineral base, which steers the wine away from any facile or cloying expression.

Winemaking

At Morey-Blanc Volnay 1er Cru Pitures, the grapes are harvested by hand and, if the vintage requires it, undergo rigorous sorting before being completely destemmed. Fermentation begins spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in oak vats, following a brief pre-fermentation maceration. During this process, gentle pigeage and light pumping-over are carried out, always under temperature control to extract colour, texture and precision without losing finesse. After devatting, the wine is transferred to oak barrels for ageing for between 15 and 20 months, depending on the vintage. Malolactic fermentation takes place in spring in the estate’s cool underground Cava cellars. Bottling is carried out by gravity, usually without fining or filtering.

Taste

In the glass, Morey-Blanc Volnay 1er Cru Pitures does not seek to seduce immediately. It offers notes of peony, violet, dark cherry, raspberry, plum and delicate spices, with hints of liquorice, cocoa and fresh earth. On the palate, it is pure Volnay in its bouquet, but firmer and more straightforward in its development. The fruit is fresh and restrained, far from exuberant, underpinned by lively acidity and fine, subtle tannins with an elegant texture. This is not a sweet Pinot Noir, but a Burgundy Premier Cru with structure, depth and tension, where delicacy does not mean fragility, but precision.
