Description

In Ambonnay, one of the most revered villages in Champagne, Benoît Marguet makes wines with the sensitivity of a Zen gardener and the audacity of a biodynamic alchemist. Years ago, he decided to renounce herbicides, tractors and the comfort of convention, working his vineyards with horses - Urban and Titan - and strictly following the lunar calendar. Thus was born Marguet Les Crayères Grand Cru, a biodynamic Champagne that does not seek to please instantly, but to move with its depth. Sourced exclusively from the " Les Crayères " plot, planted between 1965 and 1974 on pure chalk soils, this Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs encapsulates the mineral energy of the subsoil and the tense elegance of the continental climate of the Montagne de Reims. It is a raw, precise, honest expression of its place.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand with a rigorous selection of bunches. The must ferments with indigenous yeasts in small used oak barrels, without corrections, without chaptalisation, without filtering. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously, respecting the natural rhythms of the wine. After bottling, Marguet Les Crayères Grand Cru begins its second fermentation in the bottle, which leads to a long ageing on lees of at least 36 months, where the wine is refined in the darkness and silence of the cellar. During this time, it gains complexity without losing its electric tension. No expedition liqueur is added: this is a fully-fledged Brut Nature, without make-up, barely touched by a minimal dose of sulphur dioxide.

Taste

On the nose, Marguet Les Crayères Grand Cru is reserved but profound. Notes of white grapefruit, lemon zest and green apple mingle with a sharp mineral profile: wet stone, chalk, even a light sea breeze. With air, nuances of dried white flowers, raw almond and very fine toast appear, always subtle, without overshadowing the verticality of the whole.

The palate is sharp, with an electric tension that runs through the palate from the first contact. The bubbles are very fine, almost silky, and act as a thread of energy. It is a wine with a saline texture, cutting but perfectly integrated acidity, culminating in a dry, long and vibrant finish, like a sustained note in a string quartet.

A terroir Champagne that does not seek to please, but to reveal. Ideal for lovers of Chablis, Montée de Tonnerre, or the dry Rieslings of the Nahe. Here, minerality is not an embellishment: it is the message.
