Description

Réno Pacalet grew up amidst grape harvests, cellars and vineyards; for him, wine was a way of life rather than a profession. The son of Philippe Pacalet and nephew of Christophe Pacalet, he spent several years in Montalcino before returning to Burgundy in 2019. It was there that he realised that great wines are not born of artifice, but of an honest relationship with the land. The pandemic disrupted his plans, but it also sharpened his vocation: he delved deeper into viticulture, completed his studies in Beaune and, in 2023, founded Maison Réno in Chassagne Montrachet. He did so with a decision that was somewhat uncomfortable but very revealing of his character: to start with small batches, carefully selected grapes and a philosophy of minimal intervention, rather than relying on the weight of a family name.

Maison Réno Auxey Duresses is made exclusively from Pinot Noir from the Auxey Duresses AOC, in the Côte de Beaune. Behind the hill of Meursault, this area combines limestone and marl soils with cooler exposures, capable of producing winesthat are taut, mineral-driven and less opulent than those from neighbouring appellations. Here, the fruit does not seek to dominate; it is underpinned by freshness, vigour and a particularly distinct terroir identity.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for Maison Réno’s Auxey Duresses follows a delicate, non-interventionist approach. Alcoholic fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts, with a proportion of whole bunches and between 2 and 3 weeks’ maceration in stainless steel tanks, aiming for subtle extraction and a transparent expression of the Pinot Noir. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 9 months,80 per cent in stainless steel and the remainder in Frenchoak barrels – a combination that refines the wine without detracting from the terroir’s profile. Bottling is carried out with a light sulphite treatment, preserving the wine’s purity and its unadorned character.

Taste

On the nose, Maison Réno Auxey Duresses reveals tart cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and red plum, followed by damp earth, undergrowth, dry stems, pepperand a hint of cold stone. On the palate, it is juicy, light and precise. The acidity gives it a lively, lingering finish, whilst the fine tannins provide structure without making it harsh. This is neither a muscular Burgundy nor one dominated by oak, but a fresh, transparent and subtly briny Pinot Noir, with a finish of red fruit, spices and damp stone. Elegant, lively and authentic, it captures the essence of Auxey Duresses with honesty and finesse.
