Description
Louis Latour Moulin à Vent is a historic Burgundy house’s interpretation of one of the most distinguished crus in Beaujolais. Founded in 1797, the house has built its reputation on a very clear philosophy: listening to the vineyard rather than imposing the winery’s will. In this wine, that philosophy translates into a restrained and precise expression of Moulin à Vent, an appellation renowned for producing some of the region’s most structured and age-worthy reds. Made from 100% Gamay, it comes from vines around 30 years old planted on schistose pink granite, a poor, well-drained soil that lends tension, energy and a more mineral and spicy profile. The grapes are harvested by hand, a decision consistent with the estate’s classic approach: to preserve the fruit, respect the bunches and keep the voice of the terroir intact. The aim here is not an exuberant or sweet Gamay, but a wine with poise, finesse and depth.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Louis Latour Moulin à Vent begins with hand-harvesting and a careful selection of the grapes. Traditional fermentation takes place in open vats, a method that favours gentle extraction and remains true to the cru’s style. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation to refine the texture and round out the overall profile. Ageing takes place for between 8 and 10 months in stainless steel tanks, a choice that preserves the varietal purity, freshness and clarity of the terroir. Bottling marks the culmination of a process designed to emphasise elegance rather than power.
Taste
On the nose, Louis Latour Moulin à Vent offers crisp red fruit, with hints of raspberry, cherry and strawberry, enveloped in a subtle earthy undertone and a delicate hint of nutmeg. On the palate, it displays fine tannins, a silky texture and a highly refined balance. The fruit re-emerges with freshness, supported by a discreet yet firm structure, typical of a great Moulin à Vent. The finish leaves a spicy, clean and elegant sensation. A serious, food-friendly Gamay with great personality.
