Description

Louis Latour needs no grand gestures to make its mark. In Burgundy, where so many estates speak of tradition, this maison has truly embodied it since 1797, and in Louis Latour Bourgogne Gamay, a very clear intention is evident: not to disguise the grape variety, not to overload it with oak, not to push it towards a false sense of seriousness, but to let the vineyard speak with a frank, lively and delightful voice. This wine is 100% Gamay and comes from vines aged between 25 and 35 years, planted on granite, clay and limestone—a combination that explains almost everything: vibrant fruit, mineral tension and a fine, light structure. The relatively recent AOC Bourgogne Gamay also requires the use of grapes sourced exclusively from Beaujolais crus, which gives the wine a far more distinguished provenance than its understated label suggests.

Production

The grapes are harvested by hand, as Louis Latour Bourgogne Gamay demands precision from the very first step. Fermentation takes place in the traditional manner in open vats, followed by full malolactic fermentation to refine the acidity without stifling the wine’s vitality. This is followed by ageing for 8 to 10 months in stainless steel tanks. No oak, no artificial flavouring. Just fruit, freshness and that transparency so difficult to achieve when a producer of this calibre chooses to hold back rather than show off. The average yield of 50 hl/ha reinforces the idea of balance: the aim is not brutal concentration, but definition and drinkability.

Taste

On the nose, Louis Latour Bourgogne Gamay opens with fresh, clean red fruit —wild strawberry, raspberry, a hint of crisp cherry —followed by flowers, delicate violets, almost an ethereal caress. But beneath this, something more serious begins to emerge: an earthy, stony base that sets it apart from run-of-the-mill reds. On the palate, it enters juicily, yes, but immediately tightens its grip. There is lively acidity, fine tannins, medium body and a delightful tension that runs through the whole wine. It is neither cloying nor banal; Louis Latour Bourgogne Gamay is an elegant, fresh, upright Gamay with a lingering finish – a Burgundy wine brimming with energy and purity, and one that effortlessly invites you to take the next sip.
