Description

Louis Latour has been crafting Burgundy wines since 1797, guided by a clear philosophy: to respect the terroir rather than impose a particular style. In Louis Latour Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Latour, the estate focuses on lesser-known but well-situated plots in the south of the Côte d’Or, combined with small contributions from Santenay and Auxey Duresses. A bold decision in a region dominated by prestigious names: to demonstrate that quality can also emerge from outside the most celebrated vineyards.

The wine is made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes from vines around 30 years old, harvested by hand. The soils are a mixture of limestone, clay and granite: the limestone brings finesse and tension; the clay, body; and the granite, a more pronounced mineral character. With yields of approximately 45 hectolitres per hectare, this AOC Bourgogne seeks to express the variety’s classic freshness and elegance.

Winemaking

Following the hand-harvest, the grapes are brought to the winery whilst preserving the integrity of the fruit. For Louis Latour Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Latour, fermentation takes place in the traditional manner in open vats, promoting a delicate extraction of colour, aromas and tannins. It is then aged for between ten and twelve months in stainless steel tanks. The absence of oak keeps the Pinot Noir’s fruit expression intact, avoiding toasty or vanilla notes. The result is a straightforward, pure and recognisable red wine, intended to be enjoyed young, although it can develop over two or three years.

Taste

Louis Latour Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Latourhas a brilliant ruby colour, light and transparent. On the nose, red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant emerge, accompanied by aromas of undergrowth, dry leaves and damp earth. On the palate, it is smooth, fresh and juicy. Cherry and blackcurrant bring liveliness, whilst a subtle hint of liquorice adds depth. The acidity underpins the whole, and the silky tanninscreate a fine texture, without any Dureza. The finish is clean, slightly earthy and very drinkable. Served at 14–15 °C, it pairs particularly well with grilled meats, poultry, mushrooms and mature cheeses.
