Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The Stock Ranch Chardonnay is a brand-new wine from a site Kistler first planted in 2016. Located on a ridge at 800 feet above the Bohemian Highway just north of the town of Occidental, it's influenced by both heat from Sonoma Valley and fog and coastal breezes from the Pacific Ocean. Since the beginning, this new site 'had a pretty distinct personality,' says winemaker Jason Kesner. Now, 'The vines are mature, and it continues to raise its hand and ask to be noticed in the cellar.' The 2022 Chardonnay Stock Ranch is detailed, dynamic and expressive. It opens with pure scents of saline and seashell, grapefruit and tangerine oil, white pepper and spice. The palate is arresting with its pure, ripe citrus and honey-nut layers and luxuriously silky texture. It's lent energy and a shimmery feel by a taut spine of acidity and finishes with tremendous length. 500 cases were bottled.

Description
Kistler has always had something of a Californian "act of faith": since 1978, the winery was born with the idea - almost obstinate - of making wines of place in a place where it was easier to impress with muscle than with precision. Over the years, that philosophy became method: less footprint, more vineyard, and a bold decision that today defines their signature: planting a single heritage clone of Chardonnay in their parcels so that it is the soil (and not the trick of plant material) that speaks loudest. Kistler Stock Ranch Chardonnay is the logical continuation of that vision. Planted in 2016 on the Sonoma Coast, at about 245 metres elevation, it lives on a strip where inland warmth faces the mist and cool breath of the Pacific every morning. The Goldridge sandy loam soil - sandy, deep and impeccably drained - imprints that saline minerality that is not manufactured: it is plucked.
Winemaking
At Kistler Stock Ranch Chardonnay, the grapes are harvested at night to preserve freshness and natural acidity. In the cellar, Kistler opts for time and patience: fermentation in barrels with indigenous yeasts, in their underground cellars, seeking a texture that comes from ageing and not from intervention. The wine ages for around 11 months in French oak barrels (with a measured use of new French oak, approx. 35% ) to add spice and structure without clogging the vineyard. It is bottled unclarified and unfiltered, keeping its architecture intact.
Taste
Kistler Stock Ranch Chardonnay is not a California Chardonnay wine of easy applause. The nose is first light and cool: lime, lemon, citrus peel and a hit of sea salt/oyster shell. With air, it opens up more serious layers: beeswax, almond, fine toast, and the fruit becomes crisp and white: nectarine, peach, pear, a wink of quince. In the mouth it has that rare balance: weight without heaviness. Satiny texture, but crossed by a column of acidity that tightens the centre and stretches it vertically. The oak is a whisper: hazelnut, subtle vanilla, spice. The long, saline finish leaves an umami echo - almond, lemon peel, wet stone - and the sensation of a cold wave that forces you to return to the glass.
