Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
After opening the bottle of 2022 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard, it transforms dramatically over several days to reveal a particularly powerful, expressive iteration of this site. Iodine, candle smoke and matchstick define the nose before slowly segueing to quince paste, elderflower and spring honey. Unlike its reticence on the nose, the palate explodes with concentrated, layered flavors. Its satiny texture gently coats the mouth, while its generosity and textural breadth are foiled by fireworks of fresh acidity that call you back for another delicious sip.

Description
At Kistler there was always a quiet rebellion: to prove that a Californian Chardonnay could speak of a place with the precision of a great classic white. The house was born out of an obsession for detail, for vineyards that command and for exacting viticulture, more focused on tension and structure than exuberance. At Kistler Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Valley, that philosophy becomes literal: a historic hillside vineyard, with Altura and cool breezes, where the roots go deep into ancient volcanic soils. The bold decision here was not to "do more", but to do less: contained yields, measured ripening and a constant search for balance. The variety is 100% Chardonnay, but the result is not intended to be "pretty": it is intended to be true, local and with nerve.
Winemaking
At Kistler Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Valley, the grapes come in to be treated with surgical respect: meticulous selection and whole bunch pressing, seeking purity and finer texture from the very first minute. Fermentation takes place in barrel, with a hands-off approach that prioritises the natural pulse of the must. Ageing takes place on the lees in French oak barrels, with the aim of adding volume and depth without masking the character of the vineyard. The oak is integrated as a structure, not as a perfume: more backbone than make-up. Bottling is geared towards preserving the wine's identity while maintaining the energy and aromatic precision that define the style.
Taste
Kistler Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Valley, this is not a "smiling" Sonoma Chardonnay; it is a staring white. It can be reserved at first, even with a wink of flint and fine smoke; give it air and it opens up with yellow apple, pear and white peach, wrapped in lemon cream and a restrained floral flash (jasmine), always with a saline hint that refreshes. The palate is full but taut: bright citrus, orchard fruit in a straight line and an acidity that stretches the wine like a steel cable. The lees texture provides a silky, almost chalky feel, and the finish is long and mineral, with persistence and austere elegance. A premium white wine, precise and gastronomic, for those who are looking for high-end Chardonnay with identity.
