Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is pure and pretty, delivering aromas of sweet raspberries, cherries and spices, followed by a medium-bodied, bright and mineral palate, concluding with a perfumed finish. As usual, the blend is mainly composed of domaine fruit.

Features

Description

In Chambolle Musigny, where the Côte de Nuits becomes a whisper rather than a shout, Maison Drouhin has been pursuing an almost obstinate idea since 1880: that wine should not be "made", but revealed. Over the years, the family made a courageous decision for Burgundy: to opt for organic and biodynamic viticulture when it was not yet a fashion, but a conviction and a risk. At Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru, that philosophy is embodied in a very Drouhin gesture: instead of magnifying a single climat, they blend several tiny Premier Cru (Noirots, Hauts Doix, Borniques, Plantes, Combottes), parcels so small that separately they barely "speak", but together they tell the whole story of the village.

The variety is uncompromisingly Pinot Noir, and the site imprints its signature: Jurassic limestone soils, eastern exposure, ancient viticultural tradition and a finesse that seems to be born of stone rather than fruit.

Winemaking

At Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru, the grapes are harvested by hand into aerated crates and rigorously selected. Vinification aims for texture and perfume: 20-50% whole bunch, and 2-3 weeks of fermentation and maceration in small open vats, with pigeage and pumping over to extract finely, without harshness. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, pressed in a vertical press and the last fractions of the pressing are separated by tasting to preserve purity. The wine is aged in French oak barrels with 25% new oak for 14-18 months, refining the wine without making it up.

Taste

In Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru, this is Burgundy red wine in its language: silk, lace and tension. The nose doesn't hit; it hints. First a fine violet, then black cherry and polished red fruits, and underneath a freshness of undergrowth and wet stone, as if the limestone is breathing. With air, a deeper register appears - soft truffle, a touch of elegant game - without ever losing the fine line. The palate is precise on entry, with restrained ripe fruit, fine-grained tannins that wrap rather than scrape, and an acidity that stretches the wine in a straight line. The finish is long, clean, slightly spicy, leaving that very Burgundian sensation of silky minerality: delicate, yes, but absolutely serious.
