Description

Fabien Coche works in Auxey Duresses guided by a deeply Burgundian conviction: wine is not crafted, it is revealed. The family, who have been based in Meursault for generations, regard each plot as having its own voice and see this BurgundianPinot Noir as a clear expression of its origin. There is no pursuit of easy volume or artificial aromatic embellishment, but rather a serious commitment to letting the old vineyard speak for itself – here with mature vines, cultivated with an organic sensibility and that respect for the land which distinguishes producers who prioritise detail over spectacle. Fabien Coche’s Auxey Duresses Rouge, in the Côte de Beaune, offers precisely this character: a slightly cooler valley, with limestone and marl soils, less exuberant than neighbouring villages, yet capable of producing a Burgundy red wine of great finesse, tension and an earthy finish that is a delightfully archetypal expression of Burgundy.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, an essential step when seeking to preserve the natural delicacy of the Pinot Noir from the vine to the cellar. Fabien Coche Auxey Duresses Rouge is vinified with precision and without ostentatious gestures, ensuring the fruit remains intact and that the ageing process complements, rather than overpowers, it. The wine matures for between 11 and 15 months in French oak barrels, with 30 per cent new oak – a very carefully measured proportion designed to impart depth, a subtle spicy note and some structure, without overshadowing the character of the vineyard. Everything is designed to refine, not to weigh down.

Flavour

On the nose,Fabien Coche Auxey Duresses Rouge is a wine of noble restraint. It does not burst forth; it hints at its character. First come red cherry, fresh raspberry and a hint of redcurrant, followed by undertones of undergrowth, damp earth, dry leaves and a subtle hint of delicate mushroom, which immediately lends it a serious and appealing character. The oak is perfectly integrated, offering just a hint of spice and cedar. On the palate, it is silky, juicy and very straightforward. The acidity propels the red fruit with vigour; the tannins are fine, polished, almost chalky; and the finish leaves a fresh, earthy and mineral trail. An elegant, understated and deeply Burgundian cuvée from Fabien.
