Description
In Chavignol, in the heart of Sancerre, Vincent Delaporte decided that greatness is not shouted: it is sculpted. Domaine Delaporte Sancerre Silex Blanc was born of a very specific obsession: to let the flint soil speak louder than the variety. Here Sauvignon Blanc is disciplined and avoids aromatic cliché. Delaporte works with old vines, 40-50 years old, planted on flint, a hard, cold soil that delays ripening and sharpens the wine's energy. He cultivates with a philosophy of extreme respect: no herbicides, no insecticides, no fertilisers, trusting in the balance of the vineyard. And when many were looking for more immediate wines, he took a courageous decision: to wait for maximum ripeness and harvest in October, accepting the risk to gain depth and minerality without make-up. At Sancerre, tradition is precision; on silex, this precision becomes sharpness.
Winemaking
At the Domaine Delaporte Sancerre Silex Blanc winery, the grapes are harvested by hand and sorted into 12 kg crates. In the cellar, the bunches of grapes are put whole, without crushing, into a hydraulic press, with gentle, slow pressing to extract only the finest must. Fermentation and ageing are carried out in 2,000-litre vats, where the wine remains for 8-12 months on the lees. The aim is not to "taste of wood", but rather texture, calm and breath: a cuvée of classic ambition, made to grow in the bottle.
Taste
In the glass, Domaine Delaporte Sancerre Silex Blanc shows a pale colour with golden glints. The nose does not enter with explosive fruit; it opens with a cutting mineral clarity: firm pear, green apple, lime, and then the hallmark of the terroir, gunflint/flint smoke. With air, restrained white flowers and a hint of ripe fruit appear, but always in the background: the wine refuses to be perfumed. The palate starts broad and silky, then tightens: pure citrus (lemon, grapefruit), mineral edge and an athletic acidity that stretches the drink. The finish is saline, dry and very long, like biting into a wet stone: serious, straight and addictive.
