Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2017 Portela do Vento is a meaty and smoky blend of Mencía with some 10% other grapes, like Alicante Bouschet, Merenzao, Mouratón and Grao Negro, from different vineyards on the banks of the rivers Sil and Bibei. It fermented partially destemmed with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500- and 4-000 liter oak vats for 12 months. It starts of with some reductive aromas, so opening it in advance and giving it an energetic decantation might not be a bad idea. But I tend to like that reductive character that sometimes gives the wine a flinty twist; here, that character is intermixed with aromas of violets and wild berries that emerge with time in the glass and spices that come later. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine tannins, nicely textured and super tasty. This is a prototype of cool-climate red. 6,000 bottles and 110 magnums.
