Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2019 Azos do Pobo was produced with grapes from old vines in two places in the village of Soutipedre in the Bibei Valley of Ribeira Sacra (A Mallada and A Quinta) on slate soils rich in quartz and schist; it is mostly Mencía, Mouratón and Merenzao with some Gran Negro, Alicante Bouschet and others. It has notes of vegetable coal (peat) and hints of herbs and berries with a rustic and earthy character. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins and a dusty texture. 2,052 bottles produced.

Features

Description

The red wine Daterra Azos do Pobo Soutipedre is so called because it comes from the plot of the same name, where the vineyards grow on clayey soil with abundant slate and schist.
That is why this wine acquires a touch of clayey flavour. In addition, it has a red fruit flavour and is made from a variety of high quality grapes such as Mencía, Mouratón, Garnacha tintorera and Merenzao, among other grape varieties.

Elaboration

The whole process of cultivation of the vines is carried out according to the system of permaculture and heroic agriculture. The grapes are harvested by hand and only 60% of the grapes are destemmed, while the remaining grapes are bunched with the whole cluster and crushed.
The maceration process takes 18 days, resulting in a natural fermentation with indigenous yeast and a minimum of sulphite is added. It is also aged for 11 months in French oak barrels and finally bottled without fining or filtering. No other additives are added, resulting in a rustic but fluid and expressive wine.

Taste

It is a fairly acidic, dense and structured dry red wine with a grippy mouthfeel and a hint of red berries. It is a biodynamic wine that tastes very deep and has a herbaceous aroma, as well as aromatic flowers.

A wine to taste and enjoy

The red wine Daterra Azos do Pobo Soutipedre, has a Mediterranean character that makes it perfect to pair with game and red meats, as well as to accompany spicy dishes, lamb and rice.
It is a biodynamic wine that has a lot of personality, it is very grippy.
The best thing is that it has a great ageing potential, so when you keep it on its own it will get better, try it and then come and tell us what you think!
