Description

Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Tinto Fino stems from Marc Isart’s determination to give a voice back to Madrid’s old vineyards – unadorned, without any artificial sweetness and without the wood taking centre stage. The Cinco Leguas project focuses on the historic vineyards of southern Madrid, where the vines grow alongside Castilian dryland, thyme, limestone and red clay. The aim here is not to produce a modern Madrid red wine polished to the point of neutrality, but rather a wine with character, distinctiveness and a sense of history. This Tinto Fino comes from old vines planted on clay and limestone soils within the Vinos de Madrid PDO, a combination that results in a restrained, earthy and deeply continental profile. There is a bold decision behind this wine: to champion the noble rusticity of the region rather than mask it.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Tinto Fino is guided by restraint and respect. The grapes are destemmed and fermented with a maceration period of around ten days, aiming to extract tension, character and texture, but without overloading the wine. It is then aged for 12 months in used barrels of various sizes, to refine the wine as a whole without imposing oak notes. The wine then rests for a further six months in stainless steel before bottling, a crucial step to tighten the wine, refine the aromatic profile and allow the terroir to express itself more clearly. This ageing process is designed to bring order, not to tame the wine.

Flavour

In the glass, Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Tinto Fino is anything but complacent. Initially, a slightly reductive character emerges, with hints of meat, iron, dust and dry earth – very typical of an old vineyard on limestone. As it breathes, notes of tart cherry, fresh plum, dark spice and a hint of graphite emerge. On the palate, it is firm, dry and straightforward, with earthy tannins, lively acidity and an austere juiciness that is more reminiscent of stone and blood than sweet fruit. There is a certain rusticity, certainly, but it is noble, authentic, even thrilling. The finish is long, salty, spicy and slightly ferruginous. A terroir-driven wine with vigour, depth and a personality all of its own.
