Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The pale red 2023 Rompecepas Garnacha is the one wine from Gredos, from San Martín de Valdeiglesias, made with grapes from Miguel Santiago, with whom he now has a project called Salvajes de Gredos. It fermented destemmed with a short maceration in concrete, and 60% matured in tinaja and the rest in barrique. It has a moderate 13.5% alcohol, as the grapes were picked very early, but it's still a little riper than previous years, making a juicier and more complex wine. It's light, clean and fresh, a great everyday wine that is very apt for the table. It was bottled in October 2024, but it is very harmonious because, according to Isart, the tinaja makes the wines quite round and stable. 2,500 bottles produced.

Features

Description

Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Garnacha stems from the vision of Marc Isart and the family-run Cinco Leguas project, a winery that draws inspiration from the traditional, thirst-quenching wines of the Vinos de Madrid area, but does so with a radically contemporary sensibility. Here there is no artificial embellishment, no over-ripening, nor any pursuit of volume. There is landscape, character and a very honest interpretation of the vineyard. The Garnacha comes from plots in Belmonte de Tajo and the surrounding area, within the Vinos de Madrid D.O., on granite and granitic sandy soils that imbue the wine with an austere, stony and vibrant character. The continental climate—dry and extreme—further sharpens this character. Rompecepas does not seek to please through exuberant fruit, but rather through tension, salinity and purity. And that is precisely where its boldness lies.

Winemaking

Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Garnacha arrives at the winery with its freshness intact and is vinified with minimal intervention to preserve the character of the terroir. Fermentation is carried out with precision, aiming for gentle extraction and clarity, rather than intensity. The wine is then aged in large earthenware jars and used large-format barrels – a crucial combination for keeping the Garnacha’s energy intact and giving it a fine texture, without any trace of intrusive oak. The result is a wine that is light in colour, almost ethereal in appearance, yet very serious in its structure. Every aspect of its production points to the same goal: purity, tension and a raw expression of the terroir.

Flavour

Cinco Leguas Rompecepas Garnacha pours into the glass with an unsettling paleness, almost like a red that seems to border on rosé, but on the nose it makes it clear that there is no frivolity here. It is dry, austere and stony, with a cool minerality reminiscent of granite dust, dried herbs, red orange peel and a barely perceptible hint of wild strawberry. On the palate it is exquisitely refined, with a delicate texture and an almost chalky grain. The crisp red fruit passes quickly, held taut by a lively acidity and a salinity that sharpens the whole. The finish is serious, long and dry, with stony notes, fresh grass and a noble bitter aftertaste. A Garnacha for purists – more landscape than fruit, more edge than body – absolutely delicious in its radical nature.
