Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Clerc Milon is quite a muscular wine for the vintage, bursting with aromas of cassis, ripe mulberries, violets and pencil shavings. Medium- to full-bodied, broad and layered, it's girdled by the lively acids and ripe but chalky tannins that often seem to define this clay-limestone terroir. It's a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc and the balance Carmenère and Petit Verdot.

Description
At Château Clerc Milon, the concept behind this wine stems from a quintessentially Bordeaux ambition: to accurately capture the character of Pauillac without compromising its nobility. The estate, driven decisively by the vision of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, set out to restore the vineyard’s full identity and equip it with a winery capable of working plot by plot. It was a bold decision: not to seek a more exuberant red, but a Bordeaux wine characterised by precision, elegance and depth. The blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère – an unusual and highly distinctive combination. The vineyard is situated on deep gravel, sand and clay-limestone soils, near the Gironde estuary, whose influence tempers the climate and promotes slow, balanced ripening. This combination makes Château Clerc Milon a refined and highly authentic expression of its terroir.
Winemaking
The harvest atChâteau Clerc Milon is carried out by hand into small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit. In the cellar, the grapes flow by gravity into temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, allowing for precise vinification of each plot. This meticulous selection aims to respect the personality of each grape variety and blend them with precision. Following fermentation and ageing on fine lees, the wine spends 18 months in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new wood, gaining structure, complexity and a more polished texture. Before bottling, the final blend refines the balance between power, freshness and elegance.
Taste
In the glass, Château Clerc Milon is deep, aristocratic and full of nuance. The nose reveals blackcurrant, plum and black cherry, intertwined with cedar, graphite, fine tobacco and toasted spices. There are hints of wilted violets, a mineral undertone and a subtle salinity that lends it a lively edge. On the palate, it enters with firmness, yet without dureza: the tannins are flavourful, refined and enveloping. The ripe fruit is framed by a fresh structure, with notes of bitter cocoa, a cigar box and damp stone. The finish is long, serious and distinguished, with that blend of energy, depth and classicism that makes Château Clerc Milon a great Pauillac Grand Cru Classé.
