Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2019 Vinya del Rascarà comes from a single vineyard planted with Xarel.lo in 1999 between Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Torrelavit on limestone-rich soils with small calcium stones of irregular shape they call “rizoconcreciones.” It fermented with indigenous yeasts and then was put in bottle to referment with must from the same vineyard, and nothing, not even sulfur, was added to the wine at any step of the process. It matured in bottle with the lees for 64 months. It has a moderate 11% alcohol and a pH of 3.3. It's very pale and clean, bright, with a very clean nose with Mediterranean notes, subtle and elegant, delicate with subtle smokiness and a citrus palate denoting very good freshness in a vintage that could be defined as normal (in the past) with good rain and enough ripeness but keeping the balance. In 2019, 5,214 bottles were produced, slowly growing from the 874 in 2013. It was disgorged a week before I tasted it in March 2025, but the rest of the bottles will be disgorged in April.

Features

Description

Bufadors was born from the impulse of a family of winegrowers deeply connected with the limestone and the winds of the Alt Penedès, under the visionary direction of its founder, Ton Mata, a passionate advocate of viticulture without artifice. The idea of making Bufadors Vinya del Rascarà Brut Nature came about as a tribute to a small plot of Xarel.lo, planted in 1999 between Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and Torrelavit, where the soil, rich in limestone and "rhizoconcretions", gives the wine an unmistakable mineral identity. Since its beginnings, Bufadors has been committed to a philosophy of minimal intervention: working without additives, not even sulphur, and fully trusting in the natural expressiveness of the grape. In their first vintage they bottled just 874 units, a radical act of faith in a region accustomed to technical control. Today, with more than 5,000 bottles, the same purity continues to guide the project.

Elaboration

Bufadors Vinya del Rascarà Brut Nature is made from grapes harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts, without sulphites or chemical interventions. After fermentation, the wine is bottled for a second fermentation with must from the same vineyard, with no added sugar or shipping liquor, resulting in an authentic Brut Nature. Ageing on the lees lasts 64 months, during which time a fine bubbles and a remarkable aromatic complexity develop. Disgorgement is carried out by hand shortly before release, thus preserving freshness and definition.

Taste

In the glass, Bufadors Vinya del Rascarà Brut Nature is clean, pale and bright, with delicate bubbles. The nose is subtle and elegant: fresh citrus, lemon peel, a slight smoky echo and notes of Mediterranean herbs. The chalky character emerges clearly, reminiscent of gypsum and dry stone. The palate is sharp, saline and tremendously lively, with just 11% alcohol but vibrant energy supported by firm acidity. The palate is dry, tense, with a long finish where limestone, green almond and a sensation of sea breeze reappear. It is a sparkling wine that does not seek to impress with exuberance, but with purity and depth, revealing the soul of Xarel.lo without embellishment.
