Winemaking
Fermented with indigenous yeasts in 500 liter French oak barrels, amphoras and ceramic doliums. Malolactic in old barrels. Aged for 13 months in used French oak barrels.
Description
In the limestone soils of El Villar, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, one of Oxer Bastegieta's most personal wines is born: Oxer Artillero. Oxer, a restless creator deeply connected with the landscape, found in this plot a history that he did not want to leave behind. Its former owner, an artilleryman during the Civil War, gave his name to the vineyard and the wine. This gave rise to an idea: to bottle not only the fruit of old vines, but also the memory of the place.
The vines - mostly Tempranillo with a touch of white Viura (5%) - grow in poor, markedly calcareous soils, which give the wine a very recognisable mineral tension. The climate is Atlantic with continental influences, ideal for a slow and precise ripening that gives rise to structured but fresh wines of marked character.
Winemaking
Oxer Artillero is fermented with indigenous yeasts in open oak vats. Oxer avoids any unnecessary intervention, letting the wine speak its own language. Malolactic fermentation takes place in used 500-litre barrels, where it then remains for 12 months. There is no rush. Everything is done with intention, respecting the rhythm of the wine.
Taste
On the nose, Oxer Artillero is sober and deep: ink, graphite, black liquorice, with notes of leather, smoked meat and scrubland herbs such as rosemary and thyme. It is a more rustic wine than others from Oxer, more earthy. On the palate, its firmness is surprising: tannins are present but balanced, with a dry stone background and an acidity that cleanses and lengthens. It is austere, even a little defiant, but its honesty is moving.
A wine that does not seek to seduce with ease, but to endure with authenticity. Ideal for those who appreciate elegant rusticity and the soul of wines with memory.
