Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red from the zone of Ribeira Sacra but sold without appellation of origin is the 2023 Miñato da Raña, produced with 60% Mencía, 30% Garnacha Tintorera and 10% white grapes (Palomino and Godello). It fermented with 100% foot-trodden whole clusters in 600-liter barrels with 20 days of maceration and aged with lees for nine months. It's different from the reds from Rías Baixas, more rustic and with higher ripeness, 12.4% alcohol, a pH of 3.79 and 5.6 grams of acidity. But the perception is usually of very ripe fruit and abundant, dusty tannins with rusticity and in need of powerful food. 656 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024.

Features

Description

On the vertiginous slopes of the Miño river, where viticulture is practised with hands rather than machines, Alberto Nanclares Miñato Da Rãna is born, a cuvée of Nanclares and Prieto that embodies the granite soul of the Ribeira Sacra. It comes from the A Rãna estate, a small vineyard of hundred-year-old vines that cling to the soil like silent witnesses to the passage of time. Here, in the municipality of O Saviñao, the Atlantic climate filters through the terraces, bringing freshness, mist and a slanting light that defines everything. The blend is as unusual as it is honest: 60% Mencía, 30% Garnacha Tintorera and 10% native white varieties. The idea arose almost as an act of resistance to homogenisation, seeking to restore to the wine its direct link with the land and tradition.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, in small boxes, in a terroir where there is hardly room for the feet, and the bunches are trodden by foot when they reach the winery, as was done before the existence of pumps and mechanical pumping-over. Nothing is destemmed: whole bunches of grapes are fermented with their own yeasts in open barrels of used French oak. The partial carbonic maceration that occurs due to the inclusion of stems adds freshness, nerve and a wild character. Alberto Nanclares Miñato Da Raña rests for 9 months in the same barrels without fining, filtering or make-up.

Taste

Austere and honest from the nose, Alberto Nanclares Miñato Da Rãna does not seek to seduce with obvious fruit, but whispers with notes of sour cherry, wild blackberries, damp earth and dry leaves. The granite makes its mark with a dry, stony, almost saline minerality. On the palate it is direct, with vibrant acidity and fine tannin, which create a light but persistent structure. The finish is long, with hints of plum skin, ink and a very Galician herbaceous echo. A wine for palates that seek truth, character and landscape in every sip.
