Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
There is a note of dry hay and esparto grass in the 2022 Fusco, which made me think of some wines from Douro in Portugal, with some hints of raisins, reflecting more ripeness despite the labels showing the same alcohol, 13%, in the 2021 and 2022 vintages. It's ripe and a bit heady.

Description
Albamar Fusco is a wine from Ribeira Sacra, made entirely from Mencía grapes by the winemaker Xurxo Alba Padín at Bodegas Albamar. This project, of family tradition, was born in Cambados and consolidated in 2006, when Xurxo decided to devote his efforts to perfecting unique wines, respecting the personality of each vineyard as much as possible. Fusco, which in Galician means "dark", symbolises the connection between the soil and nature of this Atlantic region. This wine is made on the steep slopes of the Chantada sub-zone, where the Mencía vines grow between 30 and 40 years of age on granitic and clay soils, giving the wine a distinctive mineral character.
Winemaking
In terms of winemaking and ageing, Albamar Fusco stands out for its natural and meticulous approach to vinification. The grapes are harvested by hand, which allows the optimal bunches to be carefully selected. The grapes are then destemmed and undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation for 10 to 20 days in stainless steel tanks, using only indigenous yeasts. Fermentation is carried out in contact with the skins, which contributes to a greater extraction of colour and aromas. After this phase, the wine rests for 4 to 6 months in the same type of tanks, where malolactic fermentation also takes place, without any treatment with wood, in order to preserve the freshness and authenticity of the Mencía. Finally, it is bottled without filtering or fining, minimising oenological intervention and avoiding SO₂ additions.
Taste
The flavour profile of Albamar Fusco is a pure and fresh expression of Mencía from the Atlantic climate. On the palate, the wine is juicy and silky in texture, with a pleasant acidity that highlights its freshness and a lingering finish. Its aromas are marked by a combination of fresh red fruits and a remarkable minerality, characteristic of the granite soils. This freshness is combined with a subtle spicy touch and an elegance that makes it a balanced and light wine, ideal to accompany meat dishes, grilled vegetables or even fish in sauces.
