Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The red blend 2023 O Esteiro was produced with Espadeiro, Mencía and Caíño. It's similar to the Albamar Tinto but has more complexity and depth, more aromatic intensity and a vibrant and fresh palate, with contained ripeness and 11% alcohol, finishing with acid berry flavors that lift it up.

Description
Albamar O Esteiro is a Galician red wine crafted by Xurxo Alba at the Albamar winery, located in Cambados, in the heart of the Salnés Valley, a subzone of the Rías Baixas DO. Xurxo Alba, at the helm of this family winery since 2006, is committed to natural and sustainable viticulture methods, respecting the marine environment that characterises the area. This wine is a unique blend of three native varieties: Mencía ( 95%), Caíño (3%) and Espadeiro (2%), from vineyards ranging in age from 40 to over 100 years old, grown in small plots with soils of decomposed granite, sand and clay, reflecting the mineral character of the region. Albamar's vineyards benefit from a cool and humid Atlantic climate, which influences the wine's fresh, high-acidity profile.
Winemaking
Harvesting is done by hand in small boxes to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Approximately 20% of the bunches are destemmed, while the rest is fermented with the whole bunch in stainless steel tanks, using indigenous yeasts that respect the identity of the vineyard. Fermentation lasts about 15 days, followed by a 3-week maceration to extract the maximum aromatic compounds and soft tannins. The wine is then aged for 8 months on the lees in stainless steel tanks , maintaining freshness without losing complexity. On some occasions, it is also partially aged in French oak barrels, which adds subtle woody notes without overshadowing its fruity character.
Taste
Albamar O Esteiro stands out for its elegant freshness and balanced structure. To the eye, it has a bright cherry red colour. On the nose, balsamic notes of laurel, eucalyptus and herbal hints reminiscent of the Atlantic forest, together with aromas of ripe red fruits. On the palate, the wine is light and refreshing, with fine tannins and a vibrant acidity that gives it a long, lingering finish. The Mencía contributes smoothness and roundness, while the Caíño and Espadeiro contribute herbal notes and freshness, creating a harmonious and very accessible flavour profile. Ideal for pairing with Galician dishes such as stew, Galician octopus and grilled poultry.
