Buy Wine from Viñedos de Páganos
The Viñedos de Páganos winery was founded in 1998 by the fifth generation of the Eguren family in Laguardia, in the province of Álava and, therefore, in the Rioja Alavesa.
The winery was carved out of a rock deep in the El Puntido vineyard, with the aim of producing great wines with their own characteristics and a personality influenced by the climatic conditions and vineyard varieties.
Location of the winery
Viñedos de Páganos is an impressive underground winery carved under the rock. It is located in the medieval village of Laguardia, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, among archaeological sites, hermitages and medieval temples, surrounded by hectares of the vineyards of El Puntido and La Nieta.
In the style of 16th century wineries, the wines of this winery rest in privileged conditions and in a natural way in underground cellars dug out of the rock.
In addition to this winery, the Eguren group also includes other wineries such as: Señorío de San Vicente, Viñedos, Sierra Cantabria and Sierra Cantabria in La Rioja. Other wineries are: Teso La Monja in Toro; and Dominio de Eguren which produces under the VT Castilla designation.
Vineyards
The winery shares space with the exceptional El Puntido vineyard planted in 1975, this word in the old word means 'landing'. This land is under the influence of an Atlantic climate with hints of continental, protected from the cold north winds by the Sierra de Cantabria.
This vineyard is located on a gentle slope of 25 hectares planted on trellises in 1975 with the Tempranillo variety.
The soil composition is clay-limestone or clay loam, with a high mineral presence, a characteristic that gives the wine a singular mineral character and an extraordinary personality.
The Tempranillo variety adapts perfectly to these soils, expressing in the wines the characteristics of the soil in which the vineyard is planted. Thanks to its limited yields and a careful artisan harvest , the excellent wine El Puntido is produced.
Close by is another vineyard called La Nieta, a plot of 1.75 Ha of loam soil, shallow and thick, poorer than that of El Puntido, and with a completely different microclimate. This vineyard has an average age of 30 years and has been planted on trellises.
Winemaking
The fruit is harvested entirely by hand and selectively, using two selection tables.
The grapes that come from the La Nieta estate are destemmed by hand and an exhaustive selection is made berry by berry in order to carry out the traditional treading. Fermentation is carried out in small new French oak vats, while the grapes from El Puntido are fermented in stainless steel tanks and undergo pre-fermentation and post-fermentation maceration processes.
These processes are carried out in order to create wines with their own personality and with a unique taste and silkiness. The winery works with a variety of prestigious coopers, permanently checking the evolution of the wine in wood.
The result of their exceptional vineyards, a careful winemaking process down to the smallest detail, are exquisite wines where the essence of the land is transmitted in perfect confluence with the climate, soil and the work of man.
And you, have you already tasted some of the impressive wines of Bodega Viñedos de Páganos? Leave us your comments.
