Buy Wine from Viñedos de Nieva
Bodegas y Viñedos Nieva is located in the municipality of Nieva (Segovia), within the D.O. Rueda. It is a winery founded in 1989 as a project to recover the winemaking tradition of the region, which produces wines exclusively with Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc.
Bodegas y Viñedos Nieva Vineyards
Bodegas y Viñedos Nieva has 60 hectares of vineyards, most of which (54) are planted with the native variety of the Rueda D.O.: Verdejo. The remaining 6 hectares are planted with Sauvignon Blanc, with a perfect adaptation of the French grape to the Spanish climate and soil. The vineyards are planted on sandy soil, above 850 metres above sea level, with an abundance of pebbles, which allows the Verdejo variety to express its full potential in the wine. An important factor for the production of this white grape is the climate, characterised by cold winters and hot summers during the day, but cool at night.
The vines are around 80-100 years old. Some of the ancestral vines planted in Pie Franco are over 100 years old, and were able to survive the phylloxera plague that affected the vines in the 19th century thanks to the harshness of the soil and the climate of the region. As the vines are so old and dry, they produce very small quantities of grapes (only two bunches per plant), which makes it possible to obtain fresh but dense wines with great mineral and fruity complexity.
The grapes are harvested in different ways depending on the vineyards. On the one hand, the trellised vines are harvested at night, so as not to expose them to the high temperatures of the day, thus allowing them to reach the winery in perfect condition. On the other hand, grapes from old vines are harvested during the day, with all the care that this process entails with such old vines.
Bodegas y Viñedos Nieva Wines
Among the main wines of Bodegas y Viñedos Nieva, we can highlight the single-varietal white wines, light and crisp, made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo varieties respectively, the Blanco Nieva Sauvignon Blanc 2020 and the Blanco Nieva Verdejo 2019.
