Description

Jean-François Ginglinger is one of those winemakers who listens more to the land than to trends. His new cuvée, Ginglinger Riesling Mettla, comes from a forgotten plot in Alsace, where the roots sink into a rare mixture of limestone and chalky sandstone. There he planted Riesling (90%) and an almost extinct gem: Sylvaner Rouge (10%), an ancestral mutation that brings an extra layer of texture and a slight coppery hue. Ginglinger Riesling Mettla is a wine that does not seek to please everyone, but rather to speak honestly of the soil in which it was born. Its creation involved courageous decisions: manual harvesting, slow and delicate pressing, and ageing in stainless steel without additives or make-up. It is not a wine of concessions, but of character.

Winemaking

The grapes for Ginglinger Riesling Mettla are gently pressed for many hours, almost as if slowly extracting a story from the bunch. This long pressing, together with the slight skin tinge of the Sylvaner Rouge, gives the wine a more tactile body. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, without oak, to preserve varietal purity. The wine is aged briefly on fine lees, just enough to round without losing tension. Bottled with minimal intervention, Ginglinger Riesling Mettla faithfully reflects the soul of the vineyard.

Taste

On the nose, Ginglinger Riesling Mettla is restrained and precise: tight citrus, green apple, a hint of pink grapefruit and a mineral background of chalk and wet stone. As it oxygenates, notes of crisp pear and a saline echo emerge. On the palate, the Riesling's acidity structures the drink with nerve, but without stiffness. The Sylvaner adds volume and an almost silky texture. The finish is dry, persistent, with hints of candied lemon, fresh herbs and a chalky whisper that invites further drinking. A wine for palates seeking authenticity, minerality and tension, closer to the soil than to the fruit.
