Goyo García Viadero is a winegrower from Burgos who comes from a family of winegrowers. However, he wanted to live his own experience and founded the winery that bears his name.
The Bodega Goyo García Viadero dates back to Roman times, and is located in the Ribera del Duero, in Valladolid, Spain. Its owner owns about four estates, all with different characteristics; these are Finca Valdeolmos, Finca El Peruco, Finca Cascorrales and Viñas de Arcilla. In addition, he also has 40 hectares of vineyards that he inherited from his family.
A family tradition
His father is the owner of Bodega Valduero, and his family has been dedicated to viticulture for hundreds of years, so Goyo has inherited ancestral knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation, which he is now trying to rescue and put into practice in his own winery.
To do so, he focused on the recovery of old vineyards, some 100 years old, and some abandoned ones, and also took up traditional viticulture practices to present the best estate wines.
The "black sheep" of Ribera del Duero
In a way Goyo's approach has made him the "black sheep" among other modern winemakers, because he completely rejects additives, new oak and aggressive vineyard intervention. Goyo has been inspired by winemakers such as Pierre Overnoy from the Jura.
In his early days, he began doing research in the vineyard and experimented with grape varieties to revive the aromas and flavours of the area, which have been overshadowed by modern elements.
He is very clear that, in order to obtain the best wines, the work must be done with care and attention from the vineyards and not only in the winery.
A return to tradition
Goyo García Viadero works with organic agriculture, with maximum respect for the vineyard and the soil and with minimum intervention. This allows the soil to express itself and the wines reflect the terroir more accurately.
Hedoes not use chemicals or herbicides, and his wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts.
It avoids over-ripening the grapes and the excessive use of oak barrels for ageing. The grapes are manually destemmed and then gently pressed. The macerations are prolonged in old barrels of between eight and ten years of use. No sulphites, preservatives or enzymes are ever added. The wines are bottled without filtering or fining.
The wines are made in an underground stone cave dating back a thousand years. Inside, the natural temperature is about 8°C for most of the year. This is favourable for longer and more stable fermentations, and creates ideal conditions for ageing in small, very old, very fine-grained Bordeaux barrels, which contributes to the stability and balance of his wines.
As a result, Goyo manages to create wines that stand out not only for their elegance and balance, but also for their great quality and freshness. This is thanks to the fact that in the vineyard he works with the minimum of intervention, and in the winery he only dedicates himself to refining the product so that it is so natural that those who taste it feel that they are drinking from the same vineyard.
Wine tourism
One of the most interesting proposals offered by the Goyo García Viadero winery is wine tourism, which, by means of a reservation, allows you to live an unforgettable wine experience.
Through this interesting alternative, you can get to know his vineyards and his natural wines while enjoying the beautiful landscapes of the Ribera del Duero and the Liébana Valley in Cantabria, the area where his mother comes from and where he has plots of old Mencía and Palomino vines, which are cultivated on pure slate.
It can be said that Goyo García Viadero is one of the main exponents of natural wines in Spain, and that he has set a trend in Ribera del Duero, where other winegrowers are already following his experience.
