The wines of the Coruña del Conde winery are made in the town of Coruña del Conde, in the province of Burgos, Spain. This appellation of origin is located in the wine-growing area of the Duero Valley, which extends along the Duero River from its source in the Urbión mountain range to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean.
Coruña del Conde wines are made with Tempranillo grapes, also known as Tinto Fino, which is the native grape of the area. This is a high quality grape variety, which produces full-bodied red wines with an intense colour and great aroma.
The climate of the area is continental with an Atlantic influence, with cold winters and hot, dry summers, which favours grape growing and gives the wines of Ribera del Duero their unique characteristics.
Thus, these wines are considered to be red wines of great quality and prestige, which form part of the wide variety of wines produced in the Ribera del Duero region.
Wines produced in a traditional way
About the elaboration of these well-known wines, the general process is described below, and some specific details of the Coruña del Conde winery are also mentioned, namely:
Harvest. The grapes are harvested at the optimum moment of ripeness, generally in September. At the Coruña del Conde winery, the grapes are harvested by hand, selecting only the ripe grapes in good condition.
Destemming. The bunches of grapes are separated from the stems. At the Coruña del Conde winery, destemming is carried out mechanically.
Crushing. The grapes are crushed to release the must. At the Coruña del Conde winery, crushing is carried out with a pneumatic press.
Fermentation. The must is left to ferment in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels. At the Coruña del Conde winery, controlled fermentation is used in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of between 16 and 18 degrees centigrade.
Ageing. The wine is kept in oak barrels so that it acquires its characteristic aromas and flavours. At the Coruña del Conde winery, ageing in American and French oak barrels is used for a period of 12 to 18 months.
Clarification and filtration. Impurities are removed from the wine and it is filtered to obtain a clear product. At the Coruña del Conde winery, natural fining agents are used and the wine is filtered before bottling.
Bottling. The wine is bottled in bottles, which are closed with natural cork or synthetic cork. At the Coruña del Conde winery, natural cork is used to close the bottles.
Labelling and packaging. The bottles are labelled and packaged for marketing. At the Coruña del Conde winery, the bottles are labelled by hand and packed in wooden boxes for transport and storage.
Taste
Most of the wines of the Coruña del Conde winery are elegant and complex, many of them with notes of red and black fruits, spices and wood, due to their ageing in oak barrels.
