Buy Wine from Bàrbara Forés
The Bàrbara Forés winery is located in Gandesa, a town in the Terra Alta region of Tarragona, Catalonia.
The history of this winery is deeply rooted in tradition and respect for the family legacy. Founded by the married couple Carmen Ferrer and Manuel Sanmartín, the winery is named after Bàrbara Forés, Carmen's great-great-grandmother, who was born in Gandesa on 7 February 1828. Bàrbara Forés, the daughter of a wine merchant and an agricultural landowner, had a great influence on her son Rafael Ferrer Forés, an enlightened pharmacist and winegrower who built the winery in the manor house at the end of the 19th century and started bottling wine.In the 1990s, Carmen and Manolo took over the reins of the winery and became pioneers in winemaking in Terra Alta, with a special emphasis on Garnacha Blanca. In 2014, their daughter Pili Sanmartín Ferrer joined the project, bringing a new perspective that connects wine with culture, arts and landscape.
Vineyards
Terra Alta is a region protected by several mountain ranges and rivers, which provides a unique environment for growing vines. The vineyards of Bàrbara Forés benefit from a Mediterranean climate with continental influences, characterised by mild autumns, cold winters, late springs and hot summers. Two prevailing winds, the cierzo (dry and cold) and the garbinada (wet and cool), contribute to the health and vitality of the plants.
The altitude of the region, which ranges from 350 to 600 metres above sea level, together with the openness of the farmland, allows a high number of hours of sunshine. Rainfall is scarce, not exceeding 450 litres per square metre per year, which, together with a significant temperature contrast between day and night, favours better ripening of the grapes.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Bàrbara Forés winery is centred on respect for the land and the search for sustainable viticulture that respects the environment. Their agro-ecological approach goes beyond simple organic certification, seeking to recover the fertility of the soil and promote biodiversity. They use local organic fertilisers of animal and vegetable origin, and phytosanitary treatments are based on sulphur and, to a lesser extent, copper.
The winery follows the lunar calendar for both agricultural and winery work, and works with spontaneous plant cover and, when possible, sows green manures. This method of working reduces tillage, protecting the soil from erosion, reducing the carbon footprint, and optimising non-renewable resources such as water and fuel.
Bàrbara Forés is distinguished by the production of wines that are an authentic expression of the Terra Alta terroir. Their range of wines includes native varieties such as Garnacha Blanca and Garnacha Negra, as well as other varieties that are perfectly adapted to the climate and soil of the region. Their wines are made using traditional techniques combined with modern methods, always seeking the highest quality and expression of the vineyard.
In short, the Bàrbara Forés winery is an example of tradition and modernity, where respect for the environment and quality in winemaking are the fundamental pillars. Their commitment to agroecology and sustainability, together with a deep connection with their history and territory, make their wines an authentic expression of Terra Alta.
