Buy Wine from Agustí Torelló
The Agustí Torelló Mata winery, located in picturesque Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, is an emblem of Spanish cava. Founded in 1935 by Agustí Torelló Mata, this winery is the fruit of the vision and effort of a man who, from his adolescence, dedicated himself to the art of oenology.
Born into a family of tailors and musicians, Agustí began working at the age of 14 and, showing an early inclination for wine, opened the first wine analysis laboratory in Sant Sadurní at the age of 18. His marriage in 1960 to Carmen Sibill Cardús was the beginning of a life dedicated to cava, marking the start of a family saga in the world of sparkling wine.In 1955, Agustí made his first 500 bottles of cava, laying the foundations for what would become a long and fruitful career in oenology. His masterpiece, KRIPTA, was launched in 1978 and is recognised as one of the world's great sparkling wines. Today, the winery, under the direction of his children Alex and Gemma, produces 500,000 bottles of cava and 150,000 bottles of wine a year, with a prominent presence in more than 30 countries. The winery has maintained its family essence, projecting itself to the world with the distinctive stamp of a family with a cava soul.
Vineyards
Agustí Torelló Mata 's vineyards spread out majestically in the historic Cava area, south of Barcelona, in the Valls d'Anoia-Foix region. This privileged location, delimited between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains of Montserrat, offers a particular geology and maritime influence resulting in a diversity of soils with unique lithological characteristics. These conditions have given rise to three distinct viticultural zones, each of which gives the winery's base wines their own identity.
The diversity of soils and microclimates allows Agustí Torelló Mata to grow varieties that express the highest quality and personality. Each plot is carefully selected to obtain the best of each variety, reflecting the essence of the terroir in each bottle. This meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard is a fundamental pillar of the winery's philosophy.
Philosophy
Agustí Torelló Mata 's winemaking philosophy focuses on loyalty to the traditional native varieties, which are unique in the world: Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parellada for the whites, and Trepat for the rosé. Each variety brings distinctive characteristics to the winery's cavas and wines: the finesse and elegance of the Macabeo, the body and structure of the Xarel-lo, and the aroma and acidity of the Parellada. The red variety Trepat, used for the rosé cava, brings finesse and freshness.
The winery prides itself on its focus on organic viticulture and manual harvesting, ensuring exceptional quality in its wines. Winemaking is carried out with a deep respect for the environment and tradition, but also with an eye towards innovation and continuous improvement. The wines ferment with their own yeasts, selected from each vintage, closing the unique circle of the vineyards of origin. This approach ensures that each bottle of Agustí Torelló Mata is an authentic expression of its terroir and vintage year.
The winery also stands out for its long bottle ageing, producing only Reservas with a minimum of 24 months of ageing, and Gran Reservas with ageing ranging from 3 to 10 years. This prolonged ageing process is key to developing the complexity and nuances that characterise their cavas and wines.
