Description

O Estranxeiro Tinto is born from a bold and personal vision: that of Eulogio Pomares, renowned for his work with Albariños at Bodegas Zárate, but who here takes an unexpected turn towards the Galician hinterland. In the heart of the Ribeira Sacra, together with his wife Rebeca Montero, he launched the Quinta do Estranxeiro project with the intention of making wines that speak of landscape, texture and origin. This red wine is the result of this concern and of a free vision, which avoids rules and embraces the expressiveness of the vineyard. They work plots in areas such as Amandi (Sil valley) and A Cova (Miño valley), with steep soils of granite, slate and schist, cultivated through heroic viticulture, at an altitude of over 500 metres above sea level. Here, the Mencía variety becomes a vehicle for the expression of the soil, the climate and the wise hand of the winemaker.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by handin small boxes, taking care of each cluster from the vineyard. O Estranxeiro Tinto ferments spontaneously, with indigenous yeasts, in French oak vats of between 1,000 and 4,000 litres and in concrete tanks of 2,500 litres, without the use of stainless steel. Maceration lasts approximately 20 days, with delicate work on the skins, and a proportion of whole cluster which provides structure and tension. Ageing is extended for 7 months in the same containers, in order to preserve freshness and purity. Finally, O Estranxeiro Tinto is bottled without fining or filtering, with a minimum dose of sulphur, allowing it to express itself with authenticity and energy.

Taste

On the nose, O Estranxeiro Tinto is a wild song. Fresh red fruit, sour cherry, raspberry and redcurrant merge with notes of mountain herbs, dried flowers, a slight smoky echo and subtle spices such as clove and white pepper. The expression is elegant, precise, without fuss. On the palate, the wine moves with electric lightness: it has nerve, an Atlantic acidity that gives it depth and lengthens the passage. The tannin is fine, well integrated, enveloping a juicy, vibrant centre that retains freshness without losing its soul. The finish is long, mineral, almost saline, leaving a mark of authenticity. It is not a red wine of muscle, but of landscape: vertical, refined, honest. A wine for those who are looking for bottled truth and a direct sip of the most untamed Ribeira Sacra.
