Buy Wine from Rías Baixas
The appellation Rías Baixas is located in the north-western corner of Spain, at the southern part of Galicia, between Arosa estuary and the right bank of Miño river. With an average altitude lower to 300 metres, the almost 3.700 vineyard hectares roll out near to the sea and the lower sections of the river courses. There are five production sub-zones easily discernible in Rías Baixas: Val do Salnés, in the left bank of Arosa estuary; Condado de Tea, along the right bank of Miño river; O Rosal, in the lowest basin of Miño river; Soutomaior, in the Vigo estuary and finally Ribera de Ulla, that includes several valleys extended on the Ulla river basin.
All DO Rías Baixas enjoy an Atlantic climate very tempered thanks to the proximity of the sea, with high humidity, gentle temperatures without important changes and heavy rainfall (around 1.600mm3 per year). Soils are usually sandy, shallow and moderately acid, with granite as the predominant rock.
Amongst Rías Baixas wine the outstanding variety is Albariño, here the grapes develop herbs and floral aromas and provide wines with a refreshing acidity. Other white grape varieties are: Treixadura, Loureiro, Torrontés and Caiño Blanco that together with Albariño give floral sensations and elegance to wine. Red wine is scarcely represented but the trend is upswing and the following varieties are cultivated: Caiño Tinto, Sousón, Mencía, Espadeiro, Loureiro Tinto, and Brancellao.
